In another forum, there's a discussion going on about playing CDs. This got me wondering.

Does anyone here stream classical music? If so, what service do you subscribe to, and why did you pick that one?

Thanks.

Apple Music $10/mo and Berlin Phil Digital Concert Hall $20/mo

I was using Itunes then it became Apple Music. I started the BPO concert hall during covid. There is a wide selection of good videos to stream, new concerts as well as historic.

Qobuz has CD audio quality for everything, and hi-res for many. The selection is very good and includes many new releases.

I've got access to Naxos through work and use it all the time. Not sure what in individual subscription costs.

I second Qobuz. Excellent service. You can also "download" to your phone if you buy the upgraded version.

I use Spotify for most of my streaming but also have Primephonic. When at home I use a Bluesound Node2i streamer with my stereo system and did a comparison between Spotify and Idagio (a "classical" service similar to Primephonic which is not available on the Bluesound). Much to my surprise the Spotify sound was in all cases, at least as good as the supposedly "high end" service Idagio and had a broader selection of all music including classical.

Primephonic keeps teasing that they will be setup with Bluesound soon so I will wait a bit longer to compare them with Spotify but I will be surprised if I end up deciding it is worth paying for the extra streaming service considering how satisfied I have been with Spotify.

I tried Spotify a long time ago. They had a lot of classical music, but the indexing was terrible. Often, a search turned up individual movements instead of whole compositions. This may be improved by now.

One outstanding option is to use Roon along with Qobuz (or Tidal). That gives you the power of Roon's metadata, database, and UI along with CD-quality or better streaming. It makes a great front end to your own library and the streaming services.

I've used idagio for over a year now. Great Hi-Res audio, and wide selection of music. Their indexing is pretty easy to browse and select from.

Primephonic just announced that it is being absorbed into Apple Music. It will be taken down on Sept 7, and it will be months before it emerges as part of Apple Music.

Qobuz just lowered its price in the US to $12.99/month or $129.99/year.

Yes, but you usually have to endure horrible, intrusive commercials and the sound quality is not very good.
