When I tried I concluded that they were indeed very similar. I think the throat or backbore may be different. At the time I liked the sound of the Yamaha Shew Jazz but found it a little more taxing.

Can the drop down list be re sorted in alphabetical order? It is, then it seems to start again. Separating some monette mpcs.

Great idea! Moved all trumpet listings to a single section and into ABC order. The additions by Vennture Mouthpieces are now denoted with a Ⓥ symbol.

Thanks so much for your work on this! I use it often to explain things to students. Saves them from having to spend lots of time and money experimenting (like I did), and we can zero in on what works for them very quickly. I appreciate the clarity of the newer scans, too.

A few exciting updates to the comparator thanks to the generous donation of a proud GR player:

- GR 63XES* (T-72 BACKBORE)

- GR 65ES (#1 BACKBORE)

- GR 66MS (#2 BACKBORE)

- GR 67L (#3 BACKBORE)

These donations cover four GR rim sizes, four cup shapes, and four backbores. The above links come with a quick comparison to cups from common mass-market alternatives — the rim contours won’t match; and all four GRs have notably tighter throat entrances than the linked alternatives.

If you're a GR player that wants to get your mouthpiece(s) added to the comparator, you can get it/them scanned by Vennture Mouthpieces. With a very quick turnaround, Vennture Mouthpieces will scan your mouthpiece and send you a file so you can edit your design using their software. Send over that file if you're interested in donating!

Love your work!

It helped confirm a suspicion....

The Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz and the Yamaha 14B4 are exactly the same mouthpiece.

And the cup of the Bobby Shew Jazz is also identical to a Bach 3C, but the Shew Jazz has a significantly tighter backbore, instead of the Bach #10, or even the #76. Opinion: the Bach C cup is so shallow it should have the #76 backbore as standard rather than the #10. Compare the traces of the 7D cup, which is also essentially the same depth, just a couple thou narrower.

I have owned them both. The cups are the same but the rims are different. The high point on the 14B4's rim is closer to the inner edge. As a result, the Shew Jazz was more comfortable for me. I don't know anything about the backbores, but the Shew Jazz was a bit easier above the staff for me.

The trumpet.cloud site is now testing a limited 3D viewer feature using VennCAD-sourced listings that aims to offer an enhanced viewing perspective alongside the traditional 2D experience. Let me know what you think, and reach out directly to report an issue!

https://trumpet.cloud/mpc

3D-enabled mouthpieces will show a rubik’s cube above the respective selector list for supported designs. Rendered 3D files use something close to the original blank where possible. You should also consider downloading VennCAD from their site for advanced 2D/3D viewing capabilities, and to customize your own mouthpiece based on the Ⓥ designs you see in the comparator.

Cheers! ~ Chadwick

The 3D model ability is fun. I will experiment to see if I can get two models shown side by side.

When this shakes out, I hope Trumpet Herald will make a link to it as a sticky post at the top of the Mouthpiece forum.

If someone has an original Miles Giardinelli mouthpiece (not a duplicate), they should get it scanned and donate the drawing. Vennture does great scanning and duplication work, but of course there are other options out there.

Send us the scan if you have it, we will add it to the comparator!

Wow! This is really a great tool. Thank you for your work. I've always wondered about how big are the differences between some of bach mouthpieces and now I can see that in great detail.
On another note, did anyone here try to copy the shapes in VennCAD? Just for kicks I wanted to see what I can get out of my old FDM printer and freehanding in VennCAD but it seems that every .STL file I generate is somehow broken and unreadable by my slicer. No mouthpieces for me I guess.

We would take a scan donation of a duplicate, but we would note it accordingly.

For purposes of authenticity, and given production inconsistencies in the mouthpiece manufacturing and finishing processes, a scan of an “original” is almost always more desirable than a scan of an attempted duplicate of an original.

The trumpet.cloud comparator site now uses basic autocomplete input menus which you can use to quickly narrow down each list and possibly even discover other relevant options.

Example with "3C" input:

The way these lists work and look to you will vary slightly based on browser and device. Some browsers like Chrome and Edge are limited to ~512 entries, so just narrow your search a little if affected.

On mobile, you might need to tap the downward-facing triangle/arrow on the right of the mouthpiece selector list to reveal the available options. Click/tap the button to clear the input field and begin typing your next entry.

Try it here: https://trumpet.cloud/mpc

Reach out with any issues. Thanks for reading -- enjoy!

There's a slight bug on mobile (mine at least) at the moment...

Whilst the search/autocomplete lets me find things I know are there, the actual list stops at Jettone Doc Severinsen - beyond that only the search function will find.

Could just be my device or could be a genuine problem.

Either way, love the updates and continued availability of this valuable resource.
