There have been numerous posts about how wonderful the Getzen 800DLX cornet is, but I have never seen any discussion about the Edwards X-7 cornet. Is there any one out there who plays a X-7 that would like to chime in on it and tell us about it? Is Edwards even selling any X-7's?

I didn't see any info at all on the X-7 in a fairly extensive search...it would seem that your best bet might be to contact the Guitar Center at Westlake Village, CA (in LA), which is an Edwards dealer. Maybe they could get one in for you to trial. It's about 390 miles from you, so not an impossible day's drive out and back (~5.5 hrs). I would guess that you could also find a Getzen to trial in LA or on the way in the same trip...finding the right instrument is sometimes a trial in itself. But I recently searched for and bought a new (to me) tuba...try that one...cornets and trumpets a LOT more common (and cheaper) than tubas! Good luck!

Thanks royjohn, but I am only interested in how players perceive this cornet, what they like or dislike about it in comparison to other cornets and what they think about it. There are tons of other threads about other horns where players expound their thoughts, likes and dislikes. That's what I am hoping to learn.

the X7 certainly looks cool. Edwards doesn't post much online, and their new X-series hasn't gotten much attention on here outside of the X13 trumpet.

Maybe a query to Edwards would turn up the names of some X-7 owners who are willing to talk with you. Of course, if Edwards provides the names, they will probably be enthusiasts for the brand, but even enthusiasts can be honest and helpful. IDK if there is a British Brass Band forum where owners might congregate...good luck!

The X-7 is a great cornet. Unfortunately, it’s non-conventional design has turned off a lot of cornet players based on appearance alone. Not many have been made, which is why you’re not able to find more about it. A case of too different for its own good.

If you do an online search for Paul Tynan you’ll find so audio of the X-7. Paul is a big fan of both it and the X-13.

We might have to try to get one to Trent Austin for a review. If we can get him to put down his 800DLX long enough to play another one of our cornets.

Mr. Getzen,
Thanks for your reply about the X 7 cornet.

Trent Austin is a very good source for promoting a horn. I really enjoy his videos as do many other trumpet and cornet enthusiasts.

I know that you have a winner in the Eterna 800 DLX and if I were not corneted up already I would probably buy one.

To this point, I heard or read that with the closure of Kanstul there are now zero American manufacturers of tubas. No idea if this is actually true or not, mind you, but still. They are harder to find. And more expensive.

@Getzen: Brett, aren’t you putting the X-7 down a little? Good things will take time and unconventional designs have not hampered the success of the X-13, I figure. Once the X-7 is better known I guess there will be a market. I’m hoping to try one next time I’ll make it to Bertram in Freiburg (only 7 hours one way ).

Ha, when I said in another thread I don’t need a cornet (I really don’t) a lot of THers brought up a lot of arguments why I need one So, just to carry on the message: everyone needs a cornet or so I was told on TH. And because the internet said it, it must be true

The internet is only partially right. You need multiple cornets.

Maybe I need room for another modern cornet... twist my arm! ;=)

I would love to try out the X7. I only played it SUPER briefly at the ITG (I think in Hershey?) but was impressed. The 800DLX is arguably the best horn I own. I'd be more than happy to take one for a spin and do some recording on it for you and the general public as well.

Best regards,
Trent

Trent: I’d LOVE to hear a direct comparison (maybe with the same excerpts) between the 800 DLX, the 3850, and the X-7. The internet now says I need multiple cornets

I've seen so many TH members say everyone must have a Conn 80A that I want a Conn 80A even though I already have another large bore Conn cornet (38A).

Not putting it down at all. Just explaining why it is difficult to find much online about the X-7. It’s a slow burn and we know that. I do disagree when it comes to the X-13 though. Take a look around and you’ll see many more unconventional Bb trumpets on the market. Cornets not so much.

As always, thank you for the praise of the 800DLX. From very early on we knew we had something special there.

I’d also like to hear your thoughts and comparisons between it and the X-7. I’ll see what I can do to get that ball rolling.

Edward's former product link to the X-7 doesn't work as of now, and the X-7 doesn't so show up elsewhere on their site that I can find, so I was wondering the same thing... (or maybe they are just remodeling the web site?).

I found this:

https://www.virtuosityboston.com/edwards-x7-bb-cornet.html

Because I wanted to take a look at the X-7.

But, yeah, the Edwards link doesn't go anywhere.
