Hello trumpet friends, or shall i call us nerds? (a positive statement!)
I'm looking for mouthpiece recommendations. I'm looking for a darker piece for more intimate situations. I usually play a shew lead as my lead piece.
I know the player matters the most, but the shew just has that bright quality that is great for it's purpose, but not the sound in my head when i play jazz improvisation

The Shew lead is a pretty shallow piece. I, personally, would never play on it except on certain situations, but that's me.

Basically, any piece that's not a screamer would probably work well.

Something like a Bach "3" (no letter), 3B, or a Curry 3B, 3BC, 3TF, or 3TC. ACB has a FX series that's kind of flugel piece that works on trumpet (though it works great on an actual flugel as well IMO). It kind of depends what kind of sound you want, what kind of facility and flexibility (deeper pieces are harder to play all over the horn and make range more difficult).

Keeping the same rim size when changing a mpc does make an easier transition from one mouthpiece to another for me. I’m not sure what equates to the Shew lead pieces with a deeper cup but you may find a mpc comparison chart.

What about the Yamaha Shew Jazz mouthpiece? Seems like the obvious first step. It's a little bigger and has more cup - to me the downside is that Yamaha rims aren't the same within a series (#).. so, this will feel different.
(I wouldn't use the lead piece either, unless I was truly a lead player and in that register ALL the time) (Right there with the 14a4a - specialist's pieces.)

With Yamaha pieces I think the 14B4 is one of the best all-around setups. A well shaped rim, and cup has enough depth for a warmer tone, and moderate enough to support the upper register. One of my "go to's" when exploring mouthpieces with students.

man, check out the Kenny Rampton sig MP made by Greg Black - it's phenomenal, and easily available from J. Landress Brass in NYC.

The ideal solution would be a piece identical to the Shew lead piece you have except for having a deeper cup and possibly a more open backbore. So the rim shape and rim width and cup diameter would be the same as the Shew lead. The deeper cup and possibly the more open backbore would get you a darker sound but the piece would feel the same as the Shew lead on your chops.

I agree with zaferis that the Shew Jazz and the 14B4 are both worth a try.

FWIW I have an E2 in my collection. I got it after playing a gig with Mr. Michelou. It's not too terribly different from a 14B4 but allows me to play louder, as I recall.
