My approach to the piccolo trumpet

Hey all,

I wanted to share a specific video I released recently on my YouTube channel. It's about the piccolo trumpet, and I hope it can serve to give you useful information about how to approach the piccolo and be successful in your practice. There's a warm up exercise I learned from Barbara Butler in there as well.

Ryan, this is a quality video.
1. I learned some things from you.
2. You verified several things I do when working with piccolo trumpet.
3. In your closing remarks, you mentioned three things a also tell my students (and myself) about trumpet playing.

I am preparing to perform Let the Bright Seraphim as a duet with my vocalist daughter on a recital in December and since I do not play picc daily, I was drawn to this topic. Thank You for your insight!

I'm still in the midst of watching/listening to this video - I like what I'm hearing.

Years and years ago I bought a pic because at the time I was thinking I was going to break into the wedding scene, and I wanted the tools to do that. I ended up going a whole different direction instead by getting into Latin bands, but that's a whole other story.

I ended up selling that trumpet because I only used it a couple of times, and never really cared for playing it - just like you described, I wasn't approaching it correctly, and that's why I didn't like using it.

I like this approach you've laid out - it's systematic and makes a ton of sense. If I ever decide to get another pic, I'll definitely look this video up as a means to relearn how to approach it.

As an aside, doing some quick Google-fu, I see you, like me, are a Nebraskan.

I also see you studied with the late Dennis Schneider. I knew him a little bit - I would have liked to have studied with him, but I didn't do the college route. I did hear him play a number of times though - he was an incredible musician.
