Hi everybody hope you all doing very well, i would like to know how one can figure out if one is a beginner, intermediate, advanced or professional player, which goals do you need to achive to be intermediate, advanced or professional?, i have been larning how to play for about two years and a half and so far i can cover fron low f sharp to eb above the staff range wise, i know my major and minor scales, i can do lip slurs not always perfectly but i can do them, i have recieved compliments about my tone quality so i guess is not a beginer tone, my articulation is one of my weak points because is not always consistent but im working on it, and i cant sight read yet but i know how to read music. Which level do you think i am right now?. Thanks in advance

If you have the goal of playing in a group, then being able to sight read is important. Being able to play the notes and rhythm 'as written' to blend with the others.

A good way to get information about your playing level is by playing songs in public - perhaps a street corner or local park. If people like your playing they will tell you, some might even give money as a tip.

Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

A few things that might help you form an opinion:

-What is your ability compared to people you hear playing professionally?
Could you perform the same music with several rehearsals?

-How do you compare with players you hear in, say, a school band or
orchestra? Could you perform with them if you had only a rehearsal or two?

-How many different styles of music are you able to perform? Standard
trumpet solo music? Standard band or ensemble? Jazz? Can you
improvise? Standard orchestral literature? How's your transposition?

-Can you read new music well at first sight?

-How well-versed are you in standard music terminology, so you able to under-
stand the wishes of the composer without having someone tell you?
(etc.)

There are many things that determine the ability level of a musician that don't even involve the technical ability of the player/performer. While many involve study and effort, quite a few also are related to experience. And, of course, usually the better the skills, the faster the experience comes.

For example, I remember Ryan Kisor way back when he was an Iowa high school student. Even then, he put a lot of us to "shame".

Good luck in your pursuits!

In addition to the above, if you are "flying blind", ABRSM has an excellent multi-leveled structure of exercises, solos etc. Check out.

Take some lessons. Your teacher will be able to figure out your level, and make recommendations to help you achieve your goals. Good luck!

For me, recording myself makes my skill level painfully obvious.
