Among orchestra players, the most lyrical, singing player i ever heard was Phil Collins ,former Cincinnati Symphony principal. His absolutely flawless legato, and his ability to use and applly vibrato like a great soprano singer to change the color or highlighten a phrase were phenomenal.

I'm with trpt2. Ghitalla and Smedvig. I'd add time Morrison that list (think of all those great John Williams recordings). And , of course, Dokshitser.

I love Nakariakov, but I think of his playing as more technical, than lyrical. He's never been the player I've reached for looking for lyrical interpretations.

Everything is subjective, of course, but have you checked out his recent recordings/videos? The album "Widmung" in particular is some of the most expressive trumpet/flugelhorn playing I’ve heard. His early albums are an incredible technical showcase.

Just checked out that album. Wow. Thank you for the recommendation.

I agree with others that this is a very subjective question. There are lots of good answers here so far. I would like to add David Kuehn to this list. His two albums are among my favorites in my collection. Musical Landscapes for Trumpet and From the Mountaintop. Please check them out!

What kills me about Sergei is that his technical ability is almost off the chart yet he never lets it interfere with a beautiful singing quality.

I'm definitely picking up "Widmung" when I can.
