Also sad is that the building was already abandoned or semi-abandoned for several (many?) years before it was demolished by the hurricane.

It is sad. It's even sadder that there is no way to protect a national register location. The designation clearly does very little to protect sites. And now another has rotted away to the point that a storm destroys it. Makes me sad and angry all at the same time.
