I'll be in Jupiter, Florida in January. Does anyone know of any jazz jams happening on a regular basis within 50 miles of Jupiter, Florida?

There have been 45 views but no replies. Is jazz dead in Florida or is something happening?

I'm in south Florida but on the other coast, so more like 150 to 170 miles. And while there are some amateur and semi-pro jazz bands in the area, regular open jamming sessions around here are lamentably rare. More of a concert band part of the world. I can give more details if desired.

I'd consider as far away as Ft. Lauderdale. I referred to jazz jams but sitting in with a group is OK, too, as long as the group plays standards. Does anyone know of anything?

Sadly to get here the directions from Jupiter are "Go to Fort Lauderdale... and then hop on Alligator Alley and drive across Florida" (or go to Palm Beach and cross the state via Routes 98 & 80).

There have to be jam sessions on the East Coast. The Miami to Jupiter corridor is home to over six million people! But lamentably I know nothing of it. When I head to the East Coast it is invariably to meet old friends from my former life up north who are on vacation, or to explore that coast's waterways.

I find this to be the case in almost all major cities except New York City. Finding jazz jams or opportunities to sit in even in Los Angeles is difficult. There are plenty of players but no one seems to step up to organize anything. The best jam I've found in Southern California is at Rosie O'Grady's in San Diego. Awesome jam with excellent players.

So, what's going on in the Miami to Jupiter corridor? I'd probably even go as far as Miami for a great jam with lots of playing time. Is there anything going on in Jupiter, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami or places in between?

I'm sure there are community concert bands in every town, several community orchestras, swing bands a plenty, and of course lots of Latin jazz groups in the Jupiter to Miami corridor. I wish I could be more help with specifics! But it's the same 150 to 170 miles each way for me that it would be for you, and I am decidedly an amateur, so I've never attempted to play on the East Coast. I went to ITG in Miami in 2019 and played in a sort of concert band competition in Lauderdale in 2017 and that's the full extent of my trumpeting on the east coast of Florida.

If you're ever in the Punta Gorda to Naples corridor, I could be more helpful. In any event the weather in January will be fabulous, which is the entire reason any of us are here in the first place!

There are a number of jams in the Maryland/DC area. I run one of them, a monthly jazz jam in Greenbelt, Maryland. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. We've been on hold the past year, but hopefully will be starting up again in Sept or Oct. It's a nice group, with people of varying skill levels, and all players welcome.

For the OP, you've probably already done this, but maybe look on Eventbrite, Meetup, and local Facebook groups.

Yes, it will probably be snowing where I'm from (Nebraska).

I can't tell you how much I don't miss snow.

I've only been to Florida once, about 4 years ago so I have no idea if this is within driving distance of where you're at but...

Heidi's Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach has open jam sessions every sunday evening.

Jupiter to Cocoa Beach is around 120 miles each way.

Doesn't help you a bit now but this is a concert/jam session in Stuart (just up the road from Jupiter) from the late 80's featuring some local guys. They're all gone now.

No worries! It's a very large state. It's almost 700 miles between Florida two most extreme cities, Miami and Pensacola (I am excluding Key West). That's about the distance from Boston to Raleigh!

There was a regular jam in Jupiter, run by a very old friend of mine. He's a piano player who ran the Jupiter Jazz Society. Covid came and they had to shut it down. I was in touch with him via FB, but he's a Trumpster and left for political reasons, apparently. Anyway, the club that hosted it, Double Roads Tavern, closed down in April.
