And how they are trying to keep horns built in the US. Pretty lengthy and interesting. Long story short most components in their horns are made domestically but a few smaller bits - valve slides, joints, like that - are made in China or Germany, depending on the model, built to Shires' specs. Reading between Steve Shires's quotes in the article a bit, it seems that making almost everything inhouse may have been part of the reason they found themselves in financial distress some years ago. Their brass is supplied from companies in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Some of the tooling itself is made overseas. In good news their Massachusetts plant is almost doubling in size and getting new CNC machinery.

There is also a bit of discussion of other boutique brass manufacturers - the article mentions Getzen and Schilke but omits Monette and Harrelson - and contrasts them to the behemoths like Conn-Selmer and Yamaha.
