I was very happy to see Tower of Power in Austin last night. I was a little surprised to see a bone set up on a stand. Little did I know that their latest vocalist was a Berklee bone student and would be joining in with the horn section when he wasn't singing.

There was also a music stand set up stage right, which I'd never seen before, right where the trumpets usually stand. A sub? Somebody got sick?

Then the horn section walks out on stage, and I'm thinking... "Wait, I know that guy, but it's not Sal Cracchiolo next to Adolfo..."

Sal was their lead trumpet for the last decade or so, but he's not there. Then I realize it's Harry Kim, who was with Phil Collins for so long. At first I thought he was subbing in, what with him flipping pages of sheet music between songs.

No, about half way through the show, Emilio talks about Harry Kim, his past with other artists, then says "he's with us now!" so apparently it's a permanent addition.

He might still be learning the book, but oh my, he was bringing it from the first note to the last and seemed to just get stronger and stronger as the night went on. They played for about 2 hours, including an encore and he's a very, very solid addition to what was arguably already the best horn section in the world.

Must see if they come to a venue near you.

What is Hip? is the title of a ToP tune.

But I agree. We be hip.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy, or a more talented person. As a Bay Area kid, TOP is close to my heart, and I'm very happy for Harry!

I know. But you know the saying, "If you have to explain it , , , ".

When I first got back to the States from Asia, a "stranger in a strange land", What is Hip was one of the first things I saw on Soul Train. Lenny Picket blew me away with his dance-like moves. Bay-area hipness.

Was Ray Greene singing & playing trombone? If so, he's just subbing with the band while Santana is not touring. (TOP is finding a new lead singer).

As for Sal Cracchiolo, too bad he's moved on......my favorite TOP lead player. But, Harry Kim is awesome and will be equally great.

Yes, Ray Greene is singing lead and playing trombone on the current TOP tour. He's not listed as a band member on their website.

I am almost certain both Harry Kim and Ray Greene are just in as subs. Ray will be replaced when they find a permanent front man and I believe Harry is just subbing for Sal at this point.

I love the way Harry plays so that is good news. I didn't love the way Sal played the book at first but I came to really have an appreciation for his playing after hearing him do it live several times. I have heard very few trumpet players live have the ability to cut through the world like he did with the band. The road can be tough, he's getting older, and the maintenance on mind, body, soul, and chops in that chair probably would be insane for anybody. I wonder if that had something to do with it or maybe he wanted back into LA bad.
