I am a 66 year old trumpet player. I gig with a couple of different groups. My lower teeth have always been crooked, but lately they have started to move back in my mouth. (pressure? What pressure). I went to an orthodontist that does Invisaline braces. No wires and brackets. At first it felt weird and I had trouble playing with them in. So I practiced and gigged with them out, but still managed to keep them in 20 hours a day.

Now I have a few weeks between gigs so I am getting used to the Invisalines. I can play fairly well with them in after just a week of working with them in. I expect to be able to gig with them in soon.

My orthodontist said that if could not play with them in I could keep taking them out to play. But I think that is going to be okay. I also did not get the buttons on my teeth. She said it would make the process take longer but I would still get there.

My son go the wire & bracket braces 19 years ago when he was in high school. It wrecked his playing. He was a district and region honor band trumpet player every year. But after the braces, he didn't make an honor band. He kept after it and got most of his chops back, but it was a long, difficult process.

Like Mike said, there are alternatives to braces these days that aren't as invasive and allow you to keep playing as you had before. Inquire about these options at your orthodontist and/or try a different one. No reason to ruin your playing just because the braces are the 'easy' option for them, let them work a little for the huge amount of cash they take. If there's really no other option, they should be able to explain to you why.

Traditional metal braces can have a major impact on your development and your playing. Most seem to manage. Invisaligns or similar can be less problematic and it's worth discussing with your orthodontist if you're a candidate for them. If you are and if you can avoid having "attachments" added to the playing surfaces then the playing shouldn't be a problem.

To the previous poster with Invisaligns, I've just finished a long course with them and I wouldn't worry about trying to wear them while playing. I'd hazard that playing without them would be better for you in the long run.
