Here is a great example of what is required to play lead trumpet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7ZkSARUNCseVery
Every Wednesday, I get to sit in a trumpet ensemble with this incredible player. We play legit 4 to 6 part trumpet music.
We do get around to trumpet discussion on many subject and when he tells us about what a lead player does, we listen.
He has incredible endurance and technique and is a great guy as well.
Rod Haney's post is 100% accurate.

The 1st chair requires confidence. Few things sound worse than a timid or unsure principal/lead. But as another poster said, you have to be humble at the same time. Criticism of the section as a whole can often be directed towards the 1st chair, and the 1st needs to listen to what everybody else in the section is doing to make sure it's balanced. _________________ YTR-6335HSII
