Which mouthpieces do you play and WHY? How did you get there? What have you used in the past? What made you switch? |

No Schilke in selection, historically one of America's biggest?
Played a Schilke H (11) for a long time then a Purviance 4*D4 longer.
Now play a Reeves 42D. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Schmidt: AR Resonance
Bach: Lotus
Flugel: GR
Bass: B&S
Blessing: JK USA
pTrumpet: well …
Additional: Curry + JK Exclusive
How did I get there: trial and error, a short safari, progress as a player, and a job that pays enough to buy a few mouthpieces. I don’t keep things and sell those I don’t play. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

AR Resonance, mostly because I accidently stumbled upon them and found them superior to anything I’ve played so far (and still do). Use them on my trumpet, cornet and flugel. Other brands I’ve tried in the past include Bach of course, Reeves, BestBrass and Stomvi. To me they give a more stable and nicer tone than any of the aforementioned and they’re very comfortable. Also, they’re super responsive…playing softly on them is much, much easier than any other mouthpiece I’ve tried.

Played Bach through college and into the USAF band.. 1 1/2C..
With all that playing and players around me, moved to Warburton 4 series for more comfort, endurance, and availability of variations (picc, cornet, Flugel, etc)
Back to Bach for some time - never loved the Warburton sound, and didn't really help with endurance.
Moved to Reeves for those same reasons.. was playing more and more commercial stuff - jazz band, rock band. Liked the Dynamic Mass a lot.
Hurt myself on a gig.. found that a Yamaha 14B4 was a piece that worked on my face.. didn't love the sound nor the lack of similar rims/cup/backbores for other instruments - cornet, Flugelhorn, picc. etc
Then back to Bach - 3C for better tone that the Yamaha but not as big as the 1 1/2C
Bought a Curry 3FL for a Bach Flugel that I was playing - was the first one I found that had a Bach Taper design.. Found I loved the rim and playability . Took the chance and got a Curry 3C for my trumpet - 12 years ago, and haven't looked back.. Still on a 3C for most work, just a 2-piece setup (warburton style cut). All my mouthpiece are now Curry 3 something. I have more consistency, accuracy, endurance, and love that with all the variations the rim feel the same on my chops. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

I've shopped around a lot but keep landing back on Pickett - their rim shape just generally agrees with me and they offer a ton of customizations without spending a fortune on true custom work. _________________ Bach, Schilke, Pickett mostly |

I generally play Curry mouthpieces. On trumpet, 3C for general use, sometimes 3M for big band, sometimes 3B for lower parts. On cornet, 3C for general use, 3BBC for brass band. Mark’s 3-series mouthpieces fit me well, are comfortable, and produce a really nice tone. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

I would have included the rest of the wonderful makers like Schilke and AR Resonance but there’s a limit to how many can be on a poll. |

Ah, I see. In that case, maybe consider adding an ‘other’ option next time. |

I was at a rehearsal and another trumpet player asked if I've tried Monette. I said no and I really wasn't interested. He convinced me to trade my Bach for the Monette for the night. Even though it was the wrong size, everything was better. The next day I bought one. I still occasionally try another brand or play on an old Bach. I think the Monette is way better than anything else I've tried. I'm still open to the idea that something will work better for me. I can't seem to find it. _________________ Joe Spitzer

I have played GR for a long time (about 10 years). Great mouthpieces and also very helpful company when having questions.
When the Lotus mouthpieces came out, I gave them a try. Not because of Adam Rapa or because of the "hype", but actually because I heard several non professional players play on them and I really liked their sound.
So I tried the 2L. Needed a little time (few weeks) to really adjust to them because I was using too much force. New since about 2 months I'm playing the 2L2 which has the same great playing characteristics, but requiring a little less air. It now has my preference in combination with my old Yamaha 6335H. _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-9335CHS + Yamaha YTR-6335H

I'm disappointed that Patrick mouthpieces were not among the choices. Steve makes outstanding mouthpieces. He is also very helpful and will answer any questions one might have.
I'm currently playing on a 12.3C and a CR84S top with a CM-27 backbore. |

No Yamaha option? Personally, I play on a Yamaha Mark Gould. I find the rim the most comfortable for myself out of a variety of different brands 1.25 rims (including a few options from Yamaha themselves) and I quite like the sound I get from it. That might change when my Lotus finally arrives though. _________________ Bb- Schagerl James Morrison Meister Trumpet

Primarily play Monette mouthpieces - B11 for trumpet, B11 for cornet, B2 for trumpet. These are fairly early pieces, with no additional alphanumeric suffixes. Also have some ACB *specialty* mouthpieces (lead trumpet, one of their TF flugel-trumpet hybrids), a Pickett I bought off a friend, some Yamahas for flugel and cornet, a Bach 1C for cornet, and so on. But most of the time, I'm on a Monette B11 or B2. _________________ 1936 King Liberty No. 2

No Schilke, no ACB
I also use ACB and Taylor.
Why? I grew up playing with an older Bach mouthpiece. The shape and rim remain the most comfortable for me. Even when I use another brand, I try to get as close as possible that shape. Turned out that my old MV/Elkhart transition mouthpiece (5C) was closest to a current Bach 1.5 C. I have that mouthpiece in a number of flavors, enlarged throat, symphonic, etc. My ACB is an equivalent with symphonic backbore. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S
