Trying to have a Harmon solo heard in a band without mics is nuts IMHO. I use a straight mute unless I'm ordered otherwise.

Totally agree. I think that is often true with the use of a Harmon mute in section playing as well. If the stem is out it needs amplification or a rethink of the mute choice.

Agreed. We always use straight mutes.

I've been wondering if a Chicago Stinger might be of use for some of the substitutions.

For solos I'd definitely suggest not trying to be heard. Play like you have a mic, and hopefully someone will say, hey we can't hear the soloist.
In section work, I think a section of unamplified harmons has its place, if the orchestration is sensitive.

Hah, hah. Reverse psychology. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have done that.

But we need more info to really know a good solution. If it's just an acoustic quintet playing unamplified, that calls or one solution. If amplification is available. maybe another although it may not be worth the trouble if it's only for one passage. More info and context.

It *should* be possible for the rest of the band to play underneath the soloist in volume. Then again, a lot of groups of the 'community' sort tend to be staffed heavily with people that have two volume settings, off, and ffff.
