Anyone get to play for Veteran's Day?

I had two opportunities to play Taps this week. Wednesday I was in South Georgia at a monthly meeting of retired educators and was warmly received as I discussed Bugles Across America and rendered Taps for them. (A very nice lunch was provided.)

This morning I gave a brief presentation on the history of Taps to my grandchildren's elementary school and then played. The children in the choir are looking at a display of the lyrics that was presented while I played. I received several positive comments.

Just got back from a great Veterans Day gig in downtown, we did Mess Call and a fun version of the Star Spangled Banner.

Yes, the Last Post at a Royal British Legion Care Home Remembrance Service.

Not this year, Jeff. But I have made several Veterans Day appearances. A couple years ago I played at our courthouse lawn. We planted a tree from The Somme battlefield as a lasting memorial. It died, as did the two following attempts

Played in a VFW sponsored band at a one and half hour ceremonies honoring vets in Winter Park, FL. We do the same gig every year. Celebrating vets. No taps.

Played in a big band Thursday evening for a friends church having a Veteran's Day special event. It was outdoors and the weather was on our side.

Somebody had come up with a bunch of patrotic song arrangements for big band, along with a few 'golden era' big band charts, though I highly doubt any of the vets were WWII vets. A few of them were old enough to have been in the military during the Korean and Vietnam war eras, and those since, of course.

A local boy scout troup did the honors with the colors presentation and the Pledge, then we played a very straight version of the SSB based upon the usual military band version.

Played Taps at the flag in front of the community office (I live in an 'age restricted' community, lot of veterans)...the community doesn't like the word retirement
