I had two opportunities to play Taps this week. Wednesday I was in South Georgia at a monthly meeting of retired educators and was warmly received as I discussed Bugles Across America and rendered Taps for them. (A very nice lunch was provided.)
This morning I gave a brief presentation on the history of Taps to my grandchildren's elementary school and then played. The children in the choir are looking at a display of the lyrics that was presented while I played. I received several positive comments.
Blessings on you all for the opportunities to honor Veterans this weekend! |

Not this year, Jeff. But I have made several Veterans Day appearances. A couple years ago I played at our courthouse lawn. We planted a tree from The Somme battlefield as a lasting memorial. It died, as did the two following attempts I, however, am still alive |

Played in a big band Thursday evening for a friends church having a Veteran's Day special event. It was outdoors and the weather was on our side.
Somebody had come up with a bunch of patrotic song arrangements for big band, along with a few 'golden era' big band charts, though I highly doubt any of the vets were WWII vets. A few of them were old enough to have been in the military during the Korean and Vietnam war eras, and those since, of course.
A local boy scout troup did the honors with the colors presentation and the Pledge, then we played a very straight version of the SSB based upon the usual military band version. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Played Taps at the flag in front of the community office (I live in an 'age restricted' community, lot of veterans)...the community doesn't like the word retirement |

They often play the middle section too fast, as if to get it over with.
My father was a Royal Marine Bugle Major and for 7 years won the Inter Service Bugle Contest, then they made him a Judge for it. He was the solo Bugler for the service of King George V, and the solo bugler in St. Paul’s Cathedral for the remembrance service for President Roosevelt, so could play a bit. He also played at out Cenotaph Service for several years. He taught me how to play the Last Post before I ever thought about learning to play a trumpet.
I play it every year at various services, always for free, as a tribute to him. Hoping he’d be proud. _________________ "Nearly as good as I need to be. Not nearly as good as I want to be".
