I have had 14-year-olds pull the horn out of the case and start cold on a high C. This just fries the band director's minds. But when kids are trained properly, this is not in the least difficult, and among other things, it trains kids to not be afraid of high notes.

How long had they been playing before they could manage a cold high C? Presumably all started as beginners on the lower range that was accessible to them?

This kind of talk is a sore spot with me - I had a number of teachers who theoretically knew what they were doing who were unable to help me, who didn't begin to grasp the mechanical problems I was having.

I think the more accurate statement is it's possible if a particular student practices, and has chops that are cooperative.
