Does use of a practice mute negatively impact range?

Didn't affect mine. What are the limits of the range you're talking about?

Thanks kehaulani.

I'm having trouble playing above the staff. Probably more the player than the mute.

No. I use a sshh on trumpet, flugel, and bass trumpet and my range is the same. For me range primarily depends on the quality of the warm-up. I top out at high G, sometimes A. Playable range on long gigs is a high D or E.

The only thing I have noticed with the sshh is that you can’t do a power play with high notes, you’ll have to back off to make the notes sound. With an open trumpet you can push more.
