Hi,
I am looking for recommendations on a good practice mute. I was considering the Jo-Ral but the reviews were terrible. Another one is the Dennis Wick. Thoughts?
Thanks. |

I used the Stonelined for many years. Check Humes and Berg. _________________ Steve Hollahan

I currently use the Brenmer Sshhmute Mute. Comes in 2 versions, the quieter practice mute and the whisper mute. Very good intonation. Reasonable backpressure. Plastic (less likely to ding your bell).

Tom Hooten likes the Rejano practice mute.

I have no need for one or I would get one.

This is one area that keeps changing with improved or new products. I would really like to know if anyone uses this, also. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I've used the Dennis Wick practice mute for about a year now. It works very well! I will say that the intonation has a few issues; it is sharp in the low range and flat in the upper range. Other than that, though, it's very quiet and functions well if you can deal with a differing sound. |

You can tell from this that it's louder than others. Divitt comparison. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Divitt+practice+mutes&docid=607993530459846458&mid=FC71959ACA8E5ACA5771FC71959ACA8E5ACA5771&view=detail&FORM=VIRE
For me, personally, I need a mute that is softer (with no residual buzz sound) that has better intonation and less resistance than a Yamaha Silent Brass, which was the quietest on the market the last time I checked. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I don't care for practice mutes, but I've found this survey by the late, great Bill Dishman to be pretty spot on. It won't have new stuff, because he sadly passed, but it's pretty accurate for what's on there.

My thoughts and experience:
- I have an older H&B stonelined Mannie Klein (from the 80s). It's heavy, somewhat stuffy, and doesn't sound great. Still, it's not bad, and I already have it.
- I've played the Wick, which is way smaller, doesn't sound any better, and isn't really less stuffy.
- I've also played the Jo-Ral. I'm not a fan of that many Jo-Ral mutes, and this isn't any different. It's a slightly to somewhat worse version of the Wick.
- I have a 1st Generation Silent Brass. About as stuffy as those above, the electronics make it at least sound good in the headphones. I haven't used it in a decade and not frequently before then.
- I played the Pro-Tec Liberty - thought it was alright, better than the others above. Small, good sound for a practice mute, not all that stuffy. Should have maybe picked it up when I had a employee discount at the music store. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

"Divitt, the end."
I really appreciate it when people say things like that, or "'nuff said". Makes it easier. I don't have to use my brain. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I'm happy to answer questions about my mute.
I designed it with blow and tuning as the highest priority. Practicing in a stuffy mute causes bad habits to form because you are fighting the mute to hear yourself and play in tune. When you play without the mute, you bring those bad habits over.
My mute plays right in tune from low F# to double G. Not many practice mutes speak well below the staff. It took me dozens of prototypes to get it right.
It is slightly louder than a SHHH mute (also a great mute) but I did design the mute because I have a toddler and live in a condo. She doesn't wake up when I play, and I've had a lot of positive feedback from people in similar situations.
You can get my mute from Josh Landress Brass(there's a shipment headed there right now) Austin Custom Brass (shipment going there in a week or so), or directly from me.
They also come in a bunch of colours.
There are a whole bunch of reviews on YouTube as well. _________________ www.divitt-trumpets.com

Have used the following:
Manny Klein - I use this one the most when I am at home. For me, it seems to have the least back pressure although it is not as quiet as others.
Yamaha Silent Brass - This is what I currently use when I travel. Not a fan of the newer model "personal studio". I purchased an older version off ebay to use with the newer model mute.
Matt Anklan Trumpet Silencer - fits in the end of Harmon mute. I use this to warm up prior to rehearsals occasionally.
Pro-tech Liberty compact - Not bad I have used this in hotels before.
Brenmer Sshhmute Mute - Other rave about this mute. For me it seems like it has more backpressure and it falls out of my horn more than others I have.
Bach plastic practice mute - JUNK. Dont waste your money.
Recently listed to a podcast (Other Side of the Bell) where Rashawn Ross stated he hates practice mutes and recommended the Wallace practice mute. Maybe something to check out. Dude lives on the road.
As for the practice mute recommended by Tom Hooten. He demonstrates using it on his Instagram page and talks about the pitfalls of practice mutes. He also includes a discount code. _________________ Gary Wood (comeback player with no street cred)
