An honest comparison of my abilities and my collection leads to a diagnosis of BIAD (brass instrument acquisition disease). Here is a list of symptoms:

3 Bb cornets
1 C cornet
2 Bb trumpets
1 Bb pocket trumpet (added due to memory lapse)
1 Bb rotary trumpet
1 C trumpet
1 Eb/A trumpet
1 A/Bb piccolo trumpet
1 Bb flugelhorn
1 G bugle
1 Baroque trumpet w/various bits for different keys
1 mock Egyptian trumpet
1 Fuerst-Pleiss horn

Turning to the dark side:

1 Eb alto/tenor horn
1 Bb euphonium

Turning to the weird side:

1 shofar
1 “cow horn”
1 digeridoo
1 cornetto (added due to memory lapse)

Turning to the coveting side:

1 British style 3-valve compensating baritone horn
1 rotary post horn
1 kuhlo horn (added due to memory lapse)
1 silver plated post horn

Turning to the embarrassing side (added for full disclosure):

1 Bb clarinet
1 Telecaster & Epiphone amp
1 ukele
1 accordion in need of serious repair
Uncounted number of harmonicas

“Hello. My name is Stephan and I have BIAD. I can, and actually do, play only some of my instruments.”

Please, help me. Am I alone in this affliction?

So what you're saying is that you're a grown man and you don't have any kuhlohorns yet? Wow...

I did see a "cornetto" listed recently on the trumpeting facebook page and was intrigued. I'd also like a suona, if there were a way to play it with a brass mouthpiece.

I forgot to add the Kuhlo horn to the coveting list, thnx. However, is it legitimate to apply the term “grown” to any trumpet player, man or woman?

Well, my memory is failing. I forgot to add cornet to to my weird list. I wish I could figure out its fingerings. BTW, Wynton Marsalis once said the mouthpiece on one is too small for him. IMHO it’s too small for ordinary mortals too.

You say BIAD, other people say GAS - gear acquisition syndrome.

It's different for different people. Some people love to collect things just because they like them - it matters not how well they can use them or even if they use them. My Dad with his firearms collection was a prime example of that. He had somewhere around 130 different guns of all types at the time of his passing, and I bet some of them were never fired during my lifetime.

For me when it comes to the musical gear I own, I tend to gravitate towards high quality stuff that I know will get the gig done - I am a gigging player on both trumpet and drums, and I consider that gear to be an investment in my ability to play. My current collection:

2 Bb trumpets (one is actually issued by the National Guard band)
1 C trumpet
1 Eb/D trumpet
1 Flugelhorn
Mutes - 3 straight, 1 cup, 1 Harmon, 1 bucket, 1 plunger

2 Drum kits (one 4-piece bop sized kit, one full-sized kit)
3 snare drums (one is out on a semi-permanent loan)
2 ride cymbals
5 crash cymbals (I typically only use 2 on my setup at any given point)
1 splash cymbal
2 sets of hi-hats
2 full sets of drum hardware (cymbal/snare/hi-hat stands)
3 kick drum pedals
2 full sets of drum bags
1 hardware bag
1 cymbal bag
1 stick bag

That's the gear I need to get my gigs done. The drums are basically so that I can have a set in the bags ready to gig, and one set up in my practice space so that I don't have to deal with tearing down and setting up all the time.

Just one flugelhorn? Call me when you get to the big leagues.

Just kidding. Nice collection. Welcome to TH.

Take heart, Stephan -- you are not alone.

I have collected over 50 brass instruments, most of which are B-flat trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns.

On the weird side:
    - 9 pocket trumpets and cornets (including a 'caduceus' cornet with tubing coiled around the valve block)
    - 1 pocket flugelhorn (actually more of a 'compact' -- would only fit in Captain Kangaroo's pocket)
    - 1 circular flugelhorn with Vienna valves
    - 1 E-flat flugelhorn
    - 1 kuhlohorn
    - 1 Bobby DeNicola Puje
    - 1 King 'Mini-Liberty' half-size trumpet (in A)
    - 1 (each) York 'Airflow' trumpet and cornet (very unique wrap)
    - 1 York 'Feather Touch' cornet (valve springs stretch rather than compress)

The cure, I'm afraid, comes only when we trade up to a golden harp.

I'm not going to document anything for fear my wife might see it. I seriously need to start thinking about why I have some of this stuff.

Although I will say that I only have one flugelhorn. Words can't express how much I really despise playing flugelhorn. I'm happy for the people that like it because they can have all the flugel gigs.

Hank Meredith has over 6000 instruments now - you have a lot of catching up to do (as do I)

If you're serious (and I think not), if you are a non-addictive collector, then the answer is-STOP.
(Caveat: if you're a collector and have the resources and hurt noone, fine.)

If you're addicted, then the best course is not to necessarily fight it, but to find something equally exciting, but non-harmful, to replace it with.

FWIW, to me a horn's a tool for making music, the operative word being "music". To whit (harrumph) you can look at my signature block to see my level of collectorship is.

I always like these threads; it makes me feel much better. Looks like I am not even close to some of you guys (see gear list below) and still feel like I should get rid of some stuff …

The weirdest thing I owned (musically speaking) was an Indian valve trombone, short construction, loosely pitched around Bb. Sometimes the valves actually moved; the bell was huge and so close to my face that I could barely see the left half of my music on the stand. In spite of this I sold it again at +/- 0, so that’s cool.

Nope, there is no cure. Happens to other musicians, too. I've seen guitar guys who had two, or three dozen electric guitars, and a basement full of various amps. And I'm not talking about Joe Bonamassa, either.

As for me, I only have one too many horns, and one too many acoustic guitars, and one too many amps. So I guess I'm not doing too bad.
