Ain’t that a little harsh? I vastly prefer trumpet over flugel as well but like to add flugel for effects from time to time. Poor little flugel.

Maybe, but I am very, very glad that I’m this time not complete alone like happened too often in the past.
BTW I admire real flügel players like CT and the late Ack and I respect doublers who have to play that awful thing if the arranger decided that way, but I don’t believe in the use of the flügel as an effect.

Until the bathtub is full of mouthpieces and a person is contemplating buying a second Ophicleide, there really isn't any reason for concern.

Buy every horn you ever wanted and die happy.

Warm regards,
Grits

BIAD and GAS are definitely tempered by age. Just in my top Bb and C, I've got a great set of Bachs, Yamahas and Powells. I've bought all kinds of old trumpets and I'd guess the sum total must be near to 60-70 (yeah, I know, it's not all THAT many...)

Now that I'm mid '70s it's much harder to justify in my mind that I need more trumpets. I'm running out of storage space. The house looks like the back of a music store with stacked cases. While my son plays he's much more efficient wit what he keeps.

So the thought of "what am I going to do with all this stuff?" certainly tempers those tendencies

Someone mentioned about mouthpieces. I love mouthpieces. Always used to buy them just to see what they'd do.

But my problem with both trumpets and mouthpieces is that I have an easy time buying them, but for some reason I never ever sell them!!

Hey, I really like the last two posts! I easily buy stuff as well but have no problem to let things go, so my overall „stuff at home level“ may be a lot lower than what some of you have.

Still, I am REALLY looking at a few things right now and if I were to follow Grits, there may be a few things headed my way after New Year’s.

Happy Holidays and merry Christmas, everyone!

It may be the worst day to say this, but we don't need to have so many things.

You can be a happy musician with less stuff.

This year I have discarded several breathing apparatus. I also have two trumpets for sale.

A bit of minimalism has been good for me.

Please, help me. Am I alone in this affliction?

Trumpet Herald and eBay are feeding this for me. I realized this tonight, then came on here and saw this post. In the last couple of months, I went from two cornets to five cornets and five trumpets, with a Blessing Artist (the one with the underslung 3rd valve ring) from long long ago on the way. This purchase is in no small part the result of research on Trumpet Herald posts from over the years.

I found a couple that work really well, the others I'm going to clean up, put new corks and springs in, have the dents taken out, and probably sell again. And I'll probably keep doing this.

I'm doing this with about a $300 maximum expenditure per horn, a couple more like $80, but I'm getting to try out all of these instruments that have good reputations while not being terribly expensive.

I'm enjoying the hunt, I don't know if it would be as much fun if I had endless money for horns everyone knows are great horns.

Best,
Brent

True for me as well! Various posts on the Trumpet Herald gave me good insights into horns worth pursuing, and eBay usually turned up available examples if I waited long enough (although I didn't limit my maximum expenditure if I really wanted a particular horn).

This reminds me of the show "Flipping Bangers", only with trumpets instead of cars!

Oh yeah, we probably all have waaaaay too much stuff. Hence I buy things I am interested but also sell others again. I am not much of a keeper but like to try out things. The list below really is what I have - plus one or two horns more but they come and go and I haven’t found anything to replace the good horns on the list (yet ). And yes, of course the hunt is fueled by forums like this but also by talking to my teacher who is quite the gearhead and fellow band members.

Yes! So, so far as a result of Trumpet Herald, I have tried out:

- 2 Conn 80A cornets, one of which I will keep
- 1 Getzen Super Deluxe Tone Balanced cornet
- 1 Rudy Muck Academy (earlier, without the badge on the bell)
- 1 Olds Special
- 1 Conn 22B New York Symphony
- 1 Wm. Frank Biltmore
- 1 Conn 28B Concert Grand trumpet (my favorite so far)
- A Blessing Artist Model with the underslung third valve ring should be arriving next week, I have high hopes for that one, as it is also large bore, which apparently I like. I don't know why, but I feel more relaxed and have more fun playing the larger bore horns so far.

The horns are all very different. Some of them make me want to play them more than others. But yes! It would be like Flipper Bangers. I should be able to do this while making a little bit of money in the end, and I'll be putting reconditioned trumpets back into the world.

Best,
Brent

There is no cure for GAS or BIAS. Though it is not a terminal disease it is incurable except by a spouse who cuts of the money or takes other drastic measures to stop the acquisition of musical instruments.
The anguish caused by this malady can be briefly alleviated by purchasing another musical instrument. The longer you stretch out the search and acquisition process, that greater the period of relief. One great way is ordering a custom made instrument that takes six to 10 months to receive and constantly communicating with the maker. Cheap quick purchases of used horns give brief relief.

Compared to a lot of you guys, I'm a piker because I only have five. But my wish list is about $30,000 long.

The treatment requires regular doses of a three-part prescription: Money, time and space.

Well, I went broke a couple times, but then someone sent me a shiny plastic card with numbers on it and now they send me even more horns, cases, mouthpieces and them mutey things. The post office lady complains some, but it is great!

My first reaction is only three B flats? You need to get busy

I’ve been playing professionally for over 40 years, and I’ve kept a tally of horns that have come and gone. I’m well over 200, though I only have 25-30 at present. My one regret is not keeping horns I’ve had restored due to pesky short term financial issues. I’ve sold a couple I regret not keeping.

My acquisitions are focused on horns I can use professionally. Despite my enjoyment of the beauty of vintage cornets, I rarely get calls to play one. On the other hand, horns that are useful for lead playing (Connstellation 36B, Conn 8B, and some 70s Holton’s) are keepers.

I have half a dozen LA Olds Ambassador cornets and trumpets. Whenever I find them cheap and in solid mechanical condition, I grab them. I have one cornet SN 40xxx (circa 1949) that’s my go-to travel and trunk horn. Another (SN 28xxx) is a 1948, and with a few minor repairs is another keeper.

My 12 year old plays a 1960 Conn Director trumpet with a Coprion bell. He is the envy of his band mates. I paid $150, I think. There are worse addictions.

And my Couesnon Eb contralto flugelhorn, a $210 purchase, is tremendously fun for soloing in big band, especially on ballads.

I guess my point is you have some catching up to do, and your rationalization game needs improvement 🤣🤣

Best regards,
Bill
