Collins “Mini Etudes” #1

If you’ve been following, you know that I began recording etudes as a way to stay in shape while the San Diego Symphony was off of work for over 15 months in 2020-2021.

Well, back in June 2021, the San Diego Symphony returned to regular work weeks. Though thrilled to return to performing with my colleagues and to live audiences, having spent several thousands of dollars on recording equipment, I wasn’t sure I wanted to just put it all into a drawer never to be used again.

After some thought, and recognizing that I would have limited time and even more limited chop availability - I decided to challenge myself to record all 169 of Phil Collins’ “Mini Etudes”.

These Mini Etudes are exactly as the title implies - mini - as in 3-6 lines of music. Though these may be short, there is no shortage of challenges in these etudes. Phil covers myriad styles, key signatures and tempi throughout this book.

These etudes were all recorded on my Royer R-122 MKII ribbon microphone between 7am and 9am immediately following my warmup routine and prior to our 10am morning rehearsals. These are presented - as always - without edits.

If you are interested in purchasing this book and following along - or better yet learning these and playing along - or if you’re interested in any of Phil Collins’ other books, you can contact him via email at collinsnotes@earthlink.net or via Facebook Messenger. He accepts PayPal at collinsnotes@earthlink.net. $20 per hard copy - $15 for pDF.

As always - if you have any questions or comments about equipment, or recording or trumpet playing in general - or how to negotiate your way through these etudes - I’m always happy to engage.

Thank you for following along and for taking the time to listen.

- Chris

I’ve found these “Mini Etudes” to be an invaluable addition to my collection of etudes I enjoy playing!

Chris, I’ve enjoyed these Etudes at your Facebook and YouTube pages. I just ordered them from Mr. Collins.
I’m considering adding them to my YouTube vids as I review different horns. I’m only pausing because I don’t want to showcase my skill and intimidate you. Ok, that was an attempt at humor.
I admire the ease you play these with; it’s motivating me to improve my general health and trumpet skills as well.
Really, in all seriousness, thanks for sharing your time here at TH. Both you and Jim show a very giving side of yourselves by posting and addressing posts here. Thank you both, and I wish you a happy and prosperous new year!

Hi Jonathon - thank you for your kind words. There are so many great trumpet players out there - I wish more pros would post themselves playing alone as I think it’s important for people to know that there isn’t ONE acceptable sound to be a successful trumpet player.

Nonetheless - I look forward to your videos!
