|
|
I need a good case for carrying three trumpets (B-flat, C & piccolo) plus a couple mutes, toothbrush, etc. I'm planning to get the Marcus Bonna quad case - https://mbcases.com/portfolio/cases/trumpets/case-for-4-piston-trumpets
Are there any other cases I should consider instead? |

I enjoy my MB Quad. It’s usually what I carry around with me. I’m sure there are other good options, though. The only thing that doesn’t fit in mine is a rotary with the extra keys. |

Not the Stomvi quad. Three trumpets (even with one a picc) leaves little room for mutes in the fourth slot. Certainly not a cup or harmon. _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

Raw Brass Jr. for 2 Trumpets+ Piccolo or 1Trumpet/1 Flugelhorn is super protective wheeled case that is carry-on sized, but no remaining space for accessories and mutes. The Raw Brass Max is made for 4 trumpets, so you could manage the accessories in an empty compartment. The Max is not carryon size but incredibly protective as well and is a baggage check candidate.

These are a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion!

These are really good cases for the money. They also make a model without wheels. I have a 3-trumpet version to carry 2 horns and all my mutes and other junk.

There’s a couple interesting cases in the marketplace right now. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

I disagree. This would be my choice. Highly recommend. It wouldn't carry a whole fleet of mutes in the fourth slot but not many triples are carrying that many mutes.
I personally do not like the MB quads. I think the amount of shock they transfer leads to really poor protection. I've had a number of colleagues have issues with with small drops absolutely murdering their horns.
If only torpedo was still making cases... |

The MB case is pretty good but I might make one suggestion. The strap that comes with the case (mine was bought 4 years ago) has a habit of failing. Recently my case strap slipped while I was waiting in line at the airport and my case crashed to the ground crumpling my c trumpet bell. When I went to get the trumpet repaired at Sweeney Brass (a great repair place in Raleigh, NC), Scott said that that is known to happen with Marcus Bonna cases.
His solution is to actually set the strap at the desired length and then to rivet the strap so it could not slip.
One of the guys at Osmun says they use carribeaners (not sure of the spelling, sorry (not much of a rock climber)) where the strap might slip instead.
So it’s a good case, really practical but you should take precautions with the strap. I may have shed a tear that day for my horn |

Messina Covers, standard triple is a great choice. The 2.5 will carry 3 trumpets well, or 2 trpts and stuff. The triple carries 3 and toys!

I tried it just now with Bb, C, picc. The only mute that really feels like it fits is in the spot for the bell of the fourth trumpet; the rest are a little sketchy but work. So in this picture there's a Tom Crown Gemini straight, a Trumcor Lyric, and a (dismantled) Dennis Wick adjustable cup. It's just that mutes are wider than the body of a trumpet.

If you are happy for a gig bag instead of a case (though probably more protective than some of the suggested soft shelled cases) I really like the protec triple.
https://www.amazon.com.au/Protec-Triple-Horn-Removable-Storage/dp/B0002E569Y (Australian link so US price is much lower)
It has heaps of room in the mute bag and can easily carry 2 Bb trumpets AND a flugel if needed. Plus 6-7 mutes plus a huge music folder and all the other accessories you could need. I have had mine for close to 5 years (using it every day for 4 of those) and it has had 0 problems even though i have been a bit rough with it occasionally. _________________ Bb- Schagerl James Morrison Meister Trumpet
