Retrumpet is selling a 38b with amado water keys from late 70s and saying it is original and unmodified from Conn factory. I have never seen a Connstellation with amado water keys much less any other Conn from the factory. So what say you? Did the Abilene plant use amado keys or did conn selmer use them when they took over?

The Conn Severinsen horns -- SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 and 1000 -- all used Amado-style water keys. Those horns were mid-to-late 1980s if I recall correctly. Not sure about other Conn models.

Ok thanks for that.. Maybe the late 70s horns did as well.

Never mind. Conn, not a Getzen.

Just a word o clarifacation, FWIW The earliest Severinsens had conventional lever water keys. My Severinsen had conventional keys while the guy sitting next to me, also playing a Severinsen, had Amatos. 1969-1970. My horn was from 1968, I think.

The Conn SS horns (Severinsen Series - SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4) were all made 1983-1985. All of them that I've ever seen, including the SS4 I currently have, used Amado Water Keys. Are you talking about Getzen Severinsen horns?

When Danny Henkin bought Conn he brought along Sandy Sandberg to handle sales. Sandy started the whole concert career of Doc while at Getzen driving Doc all over the midwest in his Chrysler. Doc was still doing the Tonight Show in NYC and Sandy booked dates around his schedule. Sandy left Getzen to go to Holton/LeBlanc and was successful in enlisting Al Hirt, Maynard and others into the fold. After that he left for the "new Conn" with Henkin in charge and renewed the association with Doc. Dave Monette had some input into the new Severinsen models and as Doc really didn't like Amado waterkeys, I'm surprised to hear they were used on his personal models. Certainly not before on models like the 38B's. With the Conn move to Abilene, Texas who knows what economic factors came into play. Henkin was all about money.
