I got a Manhattan peashooter trumpet at an estate sale. Czecho Slovakia horn imported by H&A Selmer. From what I've read, Selmer adopted the Manhattan trade name in 1927, the etching on the bell appears to show the Empire State Bldg (1931) and if the serial number goes with the Selmer list it should be about 1934. It doesn't have a maker's mark that I can find (like the Bohland and Fuchs anchor) so I'm curious if there is anything in the design that would give away the maker's name. I don't think B&F was the only large scale producer of the time. Does it mean anything that the valve springs are under the valves, for example. I have a B&F horn from that same between war period with springs at the top of the valves. Not important, I just got a little carried away with the history after watching the "Uncle Jim's Trumpet" video on youtube. Mine looks nearly identical, but for some strange reason that one sounded a lot better, LOL! I tried to contact Russell Gilmour through his website but I guess my email can't reach the UK, go figure. |
