Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I'm a trumpet player in Tampa and, in the last couple of years, I've discovered that really small mouthpieces work best for me. Like, 10.5 rim size small.

Like many, I fell victim to the mantra of bigger mouthpieces being for advanced players and smaller pieces being for weak players/beginners.

So, I'm currently searching for a piece that will help with more commercial stuff on my Bach 43. I've been eyeing the Bach commercial series. Currently I'm on a 10 3/4 CW that a friend gave me. It responds great but sometimes the tone sounds a bit bland. Especially in the middle register. It'd be nice if it were just a bit wider in the rim. I'm currently also playing a Yamaha 7b4 on my Carolbrass horn. So far it feels good, especially for jazz solo stuff.

Thoughts? Opinions? Much appreciated everyone.

You can get a lot of sound out of a Bach 11A - especially on a large bore trumpet. The rim is more flat that the 10 3/4CW you are playing on - and the cup much deeper. The 10 1/2 C has a similar rim shape to the 11A but a shallower C cup. The Bach 10 3/4CW has a very specialized rim. Obviously it works for some players or they would not make it. It's just not for me.

This mouthpiece comparator will give you an idea of the rim shapes and cup depths of many mouthpieces.

You might like the Warburton 6 component series - similar size to a Bach 11A with many cup depth options but the same rim. The rim is "flatter". You then can experiment with different backbores.

Is this in two places"? Wow. I wrote a reply already. Mustv'e pushed the wrong "button". Anyway -

You can try a Reeves 42D. Nice sound and cup diameter and depth. If you're not familiar with Reeves Mouthpieces, check this out: https://bobreeves.com/mouthpieces/

p.s. as you might deduce, I play a Bach "Commercial" trumpet and a Reeves 42D mouthpiece.
