I am a little confused by the tonguing exercise (#22 in MCB): Is it a long setting exercise, in which the player only breathes with the horn in-place on lips for the entire exercise?

Based on earlier posts, it looks as if this exercise makes its appearance in week 12 of the week-by-week schedule and then stays as part of the schedule of exercises from then on. Is that correct? Are there ever any additional tonguing exercises?

Finally, help me understand how this exercise fits with the others. Why does it appear when it does and what is its purpose?

And thanks - I have been practicing Caruso without a teacher as an important part of my return to the trumpet after a long hiatus, and the comments in this forum have been most helpful.

This is indeed a long setting exercise. Follow the Four Rules, including nose breaths and no resetting through the entire exercise. Play through to the end of the drill or to the point of failure, as in the intervals, where no sound comes out.

When Carmine introduced this particular exercise varied from person to person, but week 12 seems like a reasonable time to add it since most people who have progressed and developed through the first eleven lessons (I personally think they shouldn't be thought of as "weeks". stay as long as needed before moving to the next level of work).

Other tonguing exercises were added later. Many of these are included in Flexus in modified form. Work from the clarinet book also included tonguing.

I'm really not self promoting, but you might find the "Harbison on Caruso" course available through jazzanywhere.com helpful in your quest.

Of course, it was also understood that calisthenic practice was to be half or less of our daily practice. It was also assumed that everyone would work on articulation in the context of working on actual music.

I can't find it either. I've complained to the platform manager. I'll let you know. It's supposed to be there.
