Occasionally I see references to a book by Herbert L. Clarke titled, Modern Studies for Cornet. How did that book differ from his more well-known Elementary Studies, Technical Studies, Setting Up Drills, and Characteristic Studies? _________________ Enjoy the journey. |

I've never heard of that title by Clarke.

A Google search returned this image from Bandmaster, Volume 4, Issue 3. It appears to refer to the collection of Elementary + Technical + Characteristic studies as "Modern Studies".

Never seen a copy of that. I wonder what happened to it.
I was trumpet professor at the University of Illinois from 1974 - 1982. The Clarke Library was in the band building back then, and I spent hundreds of hours in there going through every box and file. I wrote a series of articles on Clarke for the Brass Bulletin magazine, but never saw this book in his collection.

Well, that raises that "magical, musical" question - Didymus, where did you get that title?
Aside - I spent some time, earlier, researching this title and came up empty handed. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I believe that is simply how Clarke's books were referred to collectively prior to them making their way to Carl Fischer. Old editions of his books refer to themselves as First Series, Second Series, Third Series....That would be First Series (of the Modern Studies collection), Second Series (of the Modern Studies collection).... |

Dayton's comment makes a ton of sense. |

I honestly don't remember exactly where I saw it mentioned, just that I encountered references to it.
My guess is that Prof. Hickman and Dayton are right about the old advert linked by Dr. Mike.
LOL, if there is a long-lost Clarke exercise book floating around out there, then my bet is that the QPress guy will rediscover it.
I'm still waiting for somebody to reprint piano accompaniments to the Bousquet Studies. _________________ Enjoy the journey. |
