Just saw Chicago last Saturday night. My goodness ! Lee Loughnane sounds AMAZING. Blew the roof off for 2 hours ! Pankow still sounds Fantastic too ! Not bad for a couple of guys who are 75+. VERY inspiring ! This is their "55" tour. 55 Years of Chicago ! Keep it up ! |

I remember meeting Lee in the early 80’s when the TV station I was working for was doing a feature on the band at Demon Dogs, the hot stand they used to go to near DePaul U on Chicago’s North Side.
I asked him what he did to build his range and he said “I play on Oak Street Beach and try to get my sound across the lake to Michigan.” _________________ Jim Hatfield

His solo on Chicago's "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?", is definitely a "Time of Your Life" moment for me. First song I heard on the radio my first day back from the Viet Nam War. Iconic. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I have a love-hate relationship with LL. I love his playing but now every band wants me to play like him. One particular band would always end a 3-hour gig with a 3 song Chicago medley _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

At the end of a three hour gig I would appreciate closing with Miles Davis’ version of “Billy Boy,” the one on which he’s tacit. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I've always loved his sound. Nice warm, rich tone from bottom to top. |

Agreed. I'm a long term fan as a music consumer. I read an interview awhile ago where he said he plays with earplugs now, so he doesn't have a great feel for the quality of his sound. Cripes, I can hear myself and I can't always get the quality I want. I don't think he is capable of sounding crappy. _________________ -Ed |

It is possible that he has hearing problems. The ears suffer when exposed to high volumes for a long time.

Speaking of hearing problems, I wear ReSound hearing aids and recently added a ReSound mini microphone that pairs with them with management via the ReSound app on my iPhone. I'm hearing better with the new combination.
The little mic is also a huge help in restaurants because it reduces background noise while also amplifiying table talk. _________________ Jim Hatfield

It should be said that not all ear plugs are the same. Some block most all sound leaving the player with just what physically conducts through the bone. I've played with this type and it's a challenge for sure. There are others that claim to reduce SPL a finite amount with a fair fraction of the natural sound still coming through. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I'm curious why you dropped the Widex aids. I just completed a 3 month trial of the Moment 440s and got my very own set. FWIW I had no out-of-pocket for these. While not perfect, it's way better than the top-of-the-line Phonax I tried. To date I've never had to remove them when practicing or performing. I almost never use the default "Universal" setting and routinely favor the "PureSound" setting. To my ears it's far more natural sounding. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I went back to the ReSounds because the ReSound mini mic has made it so much easier for me to hear in spite of background noise. _________________ Jim Hatfield

His soloing always seemed good, or well structured. It's impressive he contributed a successful tune for them also..
Chops, improv, sound, great career, rock star, the guy had it all.

Wow, guys reading your responses here and thinking about those good old days is inspiring while I work an overnight shift in the group home. My younger brother was Chicago crazy and had every album. When he went to Columbus, Ohio for tech school he got a part time job working security at a venue that had concerts. He got to work like Isaac Hayes, Chicago, etc. said he was backstage with them which he thought was inspiring. Hey, I am glad to hear that LL is still hitting it hard in his mid seventies. Their music was always close and tight and inspiring. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

Does anyone know who did the bulk of Chicago's horn arrangements? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Thanks, ebolton. To me, they have a distinct sound on their background and filler music. Might be a trumpet/bone doubling with tenor harmony in the middle. Don't now. But thanks.

Pankow's arrangements are very distinctive as well as his and Lee's sound.
I saw a filmed performance of Chicago some years back. Apparently Lee Loughnane's wife was having a baby and Lee Thornburg was subbing. They didn't sound like Chicago to me. Thornburg is a fabulous trumpeter but his sound wasn't right to my ears. He sounds more like a lead player than Loughnane. I know they also use a sub on trombone for Pankow from time to time. Nick Lane I think. I've never heard them with him on bone. Ray Hermann is with the band on sax since Walt Parazaider left the band for health reasons. Walt was also diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's Disease recently. |
