Hello all!

I am beginning to program my graduate recital for next semester, and I have been scouring around the internet for trumpet solos that are accompanied by organ. I'm not completely against the idea of playing some sort of sacred work, but I would prefer to find something secular. Bonus points would go to pieces which are from the 20th century (or newer!).

Thanks!

Robert Nagel "Trumpet Processional" for trumpet and organ.
Nice organ & trumpet work, not hard, sounds traditional but has a few more modern chords stuck in.

I have heard this performed and it is quite nice:
Petr Eben "Windows"
Four movements for trumpet and organ after Marc Chagall
Since its origin in 1976 Windows has been one of the most frequently performed pieces by the composer. The individual movements of the cycle are named after colours: The Blue Window, The Green Window, The Red Window and The Golden Window.

Hovhaness "Sonata" and "Prayer of St. Gregory"

Second the motion on Prayer of St. Gregory. First thing that came to mind.
I don't know what skill level is required for your recital, though.

If you want to "class up" your presentation a bit, it's orchestrated for Trumpet and either (can't remember) String Quartet or String Quintet.

Hakan Hardenberger cut an entire album of 20th century trumpet & organ music, Prières Sans Paroles: French Music for Trumpet and Organ. The composers are Marius Constant (1925-2004), Henri Tomasi (1901-1971), André Jolivet (1905-1974), Henri Sauguet (1901-1989), Pierre Jansen (1930-2015), Erik Satie (1866-1925), Jean-Michel Damase (1928-2013), and Naji Hakim (born 1955). The trick is it's all, you know, Hakan-level stuff. Only a few of the songs seem to be on Youtube but hopefully the album is still on iTunes, where I bought it many years ago.

David Sampson The Mysteries Remain

For this, and the Eben, you need a very good organist!

Dig around and you should be able to find some trumpet organ arrangements for Pictures at an Exhibition - OK - it's 1874 but sounds great.

Phil Snedecor's Lysric Sonata comes to mind, as does his Serenade. I believe Ryan Anthony and Gary Beard have a number of arrangements for trumpet and organ, but I don't recall any of them being contemporary pieces.

Edit: Check out the Editions BIM website. It has a nice collection of pieces for trumpet and organ, including those by Tony Plog and other contemporary composers.

Maybe this link will help in your search: https://www.stretta-music.de/en/trumpet-with-organ

You can adjust the parameters for style, difficulty level, etc. Good luck!

Goggle Bobby Hackett on youtube playing DREAM, he did an entire album of playing cornet/trumpet with Johnny Seng on Wurlitzer organ. Dream is one of the pieces from the album, and it is fantastic.

Markus Stockhausen & Margareta Hürholz: new colors of trumpet and organ.

Not exactly light music you would play as an encore, but 20th century.

You can listen to the first 2 min of some of the tracks here:

Do a YouTube search for Diane Bish and Chuck Seipp. These are great. Diane had an organ TV show (The Joy of Music) in the 80s and Chuck was a US Army Band Pershing's Own trumpeter. They recorded a bunch of classic pieces together. Chuck has written a really good trumpet and organ book of mostly classic wedding pieces.

Alison did a whole album on the works of bach. From what I remember most of the songs are with organ. However most of these from what I remember are piccolo pieces or pieces re-written for piccolo.

mastandinger, I'm just curios - are you planning on doing the entire recital with just the organ/trumpet duo?

Gabriel's Oboe sounds really nice with trumpet and organ:

For something much more modern, try 'RECITS HEROÏQUES' for trumpet and organ by Jean-Baptiste Robin

YES! I love this song. The whole album is great but this is the standout song.

Isn't this limited to classical pieces?
Unless it's an encore piece, I'm not sure something lighter and pop-ish is what you're looking for.
If you are, we could be here all night.

I have to imagine it is limited to classical pieces but the Dr. Lonnie Smith / Lee Morgan does it all of OP's criteria: trumpet/organ, 20th century, secular.

Just one piece! I have always loved the organ, so I really wanted to find a way to incorporate it into my recital
