This is really cool and I'd love to try one but the $3195 MSRP is much too high imo unless it's a schilke-level horn. Maybe it is? Has anyone tried one yet?

I'm not seeing that MSRP on that CarolBrass site. HornTrader has it priced at $2350 (Lacquer) and $2500 (Silver).

I think we're talking about different trumpets, I was referring to the Eb/D trumpet carol has also just released.

Gotcha. I didn't catch that, that the "Andrea Guiffredi model by Carol Brass" thread had moved over to discussing the CB D/Eb. I did not try that horn while at ITG, fyi.

This thread shows me how subjective our opinions tend to be when describing how horns sound. That being said, I've read over the years a fair number of players saying they don't like sterling silver lead pipes due to them sounding "bright." I wonder how that horn would sound had they used a gold brass bell instead of yellow brass.

First impressions of the new CB AG are very positive. Attributes that come to mind are:

Very responsive
Nimble/agile
Centered/"dialed-in" sound
Warm resonance throughout all ranges
Very even
Excellent intonation
Warm resonance can really intensify when you lean into it
Broader sound than a Bach 37 or Schilke S32, but still focused/defined
Slots are defined, but not rigid
Colorful sound....not sterile or boring
Mouthpiece choice has a great affect on sound
Not mouthpiece sensitive
Excellent fit & finish (think Yamaha)

(All above impressions are with the lacquered version and using the square/D-shaped tuning slide)

I did play it at ITG on Wednesday but found it strikingly tinny to my ear. I was not anticipating that, either. Perhaps that's the very light bell and sterling leadpipe that gave me that result. Maybe it would mean having to use a different mpc from the ACB MV3C that I used at the time, or a different approach to my blow, to get the sound that I hear in TA's recording on ACB and the artist AG's takes on the CB site and on YouTube. They definitely get better results than I did.

The AG has a rather different sound behind the bell than other horns I have owned & tried (easily over 50). There is a good amount of feedback and a certain narrow frequency range (high midrange/low treble) that is emphasized. It can make the horn sound rather bright (mouthpiece choice affects this), but the sound out front doesn't exhibit this at all. I played my AG on a 4 hour rock/soul/R&B gig on Saturday and I liked the fact that the "enhanced" sound behind the bell allowed me to hear myself easier. Again, the sound out front is *not* the same as what you hear whilst playing.

Thanks for the review Lawler Bb. Useful stuff.

Can you please elabourate on the connection between "mouthpiece choice has a great effect on sound" with "not mouthpiece sensitive".
I can't get my head around that.

Good point. I should clarify this by saying that a wide variety of mouthpieces (makes and designs) work well. (For example, my Schilke S32 “doesn’t like” some brands of mouthpieces-things just seem “off”). That’s what I meant by “not mouthpiece sensitive”.

The AG’s sound can be greatly enhanced/shaded/colored/modified by mouthpiece selection. Some trumpets are rigid in their sound profile……the AG is very malleable.

If someone would like a video showing this, I would be happy to make one.

Still liking my AG. I think I would best compare it to a Schilke B1 or X3 with more density and core to the sound. A lot of fun to play. The “modern” valve caps & buttons make a little difference in playability, and of course the rounded tuning slide changes the blow and slotting (I prefer the square/D shaped slide).

Anyone else have one?

If anyone's interested, Austin Custom Brass has the AG Carol horns on sale at the moment.

There's some really good YouTube vids of the Giuffredi model at YouTube, but here's one I made just a few days ago. I met Greg, another TH guy and good friend, at a Hotel when I was on a work trip. I had two horns, a Bach 37 and Stomvi USA 27, and he brought his CB Giuffredi, an Edwards X-13 and an X-27 as well. I made a quick vid with some discussion and play on each.

The CarolBrass Giuffredi is played about 7 minutes in.

Still liking the AG. Only gripe I have is that the bell is very thin. I just noticed that I have several little stand or mute dings that have appeared and I've been very careful.

I've also used a Denis Wick Tone Collar from time to time when I want to "reign" it in a little more.

Wow... So, a VERY thin bell, hm? Interesting.

I've always thought thin, yellow-brass bells were the easiest to color the tone via mouthpiece change. Would you consider the AG to be pretty mouthpiece sensitive or not?[/youtube]

Yes. I've been able to go from dark/chocolately/smokey to searingly bright with a few different mouthpieces.

So far, I have not run into any issues with the bell...but thanks for the warning...I'll be extra careful.

Which tuning slide do you use on this horn? The rounded or D shaped? Do you use the heavy or light caps?

I'm using the rounded tuning slide with the heavier caps. The are only slightly heavier...not like some of the heavy caps I've seen on other horns....

Does anyone know how Carol makes bells? All by hand? Partially by machine?

(please no fatherly lectures, thanks)

I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

Did you get the one at ACB? I've had my eye on that horn. Not quite ready to buy yet. Oh well I guess I'll have to get a brand new one! I should sell a couple first.
