I’m right there with you, in terms of the long hiatus, the Chet Baker - Art Farmer influence, and just really having fun this time around. Also, I went from a bright trumpet / dark flugelhorn setup, to playing just one trumpet and mouthpiece combination that gives me a darker warmer sound. If you follow your ear, really working to get the tone you want, even recording yourself and listening to how you sound, you probably won’t feel the need for a flugel. At least that’s been my experience. http://johnpiazza.net/trumpet/

Welcome back. Enjoy.
Agree with all that say that Flugelhorn is a very different approach. For me, I would call it a lot more gentle. But that depends on both the Bb and the flugelhorn when you are comparing. I tried a lot of flugelhorns before getting mine. Some played more like trumpets than others. Though not always the best practice, you can power your way around on the Bb, but the flugelhorn is less appreciative of that approach. Mouthpiece to match the horn was very important to me. I have a Taylor standard flugelhorn and mouthpieces that worked on Yamaha and other flugels did not go well with it. I eventually got a Taylor mouthpiece and am quite happy with it.

Welcome back! 25-ish years here too.

I haven't played a flugelhorn since the early 90s ... I used one in drum corps while playing trumpet everywhere else ... but back then, for whatever reason, I was able to switch back and forth seamlessly. But it seems like I was an odd ball from the thread.

Range, tone, and flexibility continue to improve after 10 1/2 months.

Endurance ... not as much.

I've tried many mouthpieces and have sold (or thrown out) most of them.

I decided that what I need is practice room therapy, not retail therapy.

I've been playing almost every day for 6 1/2 weeks. The first few weeks, it was ugly. But, this week, things have really improved. My tone, my endurance, my lip flexibilities, and, to some extent, my range, have all taken a leap.

I'm mostly playing Art Farmer and Chet Baker stuff, and lots of scales and flexibility slurs to build range. Some long tones, too. It's lots of fun.

I know your post is old, but I wanted to comment on your bad experience with a flugel. I quit playing in 1971, (when I got a draft notice and joined the Navy). I only started to play again about 8 years ago when my then 12 year old daughter decided to join her 6th grade band and play a trumpet. I am lucky that my area has a lot of estate sales and nice trumpets pop up often (see my list, and those are only the ones that I decided to keep). I managed to get a mint condtion Benge 3 flugelhorn on a straight up trade for a Besson 10-10 trombone and a nice King student trumpet. I was able to play "Feel So Good", top to bottom, the first day I had the Benge. I found it easy to play and get a nice tone on it. And that was only a year after I started playing again. Something must have been seriously wrong with your flugelhorn.

PS: Congrats on playing again.
