I have an interesting Kanstul Bb here that I cannot identify. The only number is "1250" on the 2nd valve which I assume is the serial. No model on the usual spots under the bell or hiding anywhere. Everyone that has tried it seems to think it plays like a large bore horn. I have uploaded a few pictures to Dropbox below. Anyone know what this is?

Looks like a 700 to me. Tell-tale signs:

Non-Signature Valve block
Non-reverse leadpipe (so not a 900)
amado waterkeys
S brace shape
3rd valve slide bracing (not signature)

Looks very much like my 700 - it doesn't happen to have 700 stamped on the mpc receiver? Pretty sure mine does - will check when I get home.

Cheers,
Roger

It's a 700.

Where the mystery is is that the serial number would have been a Fullerton-made horn, built circa 1991. They didn't move to Anaheim until 1993...94ish.

Could be a replacement bell with the Anaheim stamp.

Model numbers didn't start appearing on horns until after the Anaheim move. Before that, we had to determine what model it was by the bell flare or other specific identifying characteristics.

It started with model numbers stamped on the receiver. Then around 2007 (I think) it was stamped on the bell.

And then you hafta factor in that Zig would change his mind on what he'd call the different models.

'Twas seldom a dull moment at the Kanstul factory!

Thanks for that info Tim - looking at the various attempts at dating Kanstul horns via serial numbers, my 700 was built around 2005, which would gel with the fact that it does have the model number on the receiver.

Cheers,
Roger

Sadly, Zig didn't keep a list of serial numbers. And when the new millennium came...hooboy...was that ever confusing. He wanted to do something to signify a horn was made after the year 1999, but couldn't decide exactly what he wanted.

Sometimes a valve cluster would be stamped when it was completed...and sometimes it was stamped later on when it was attached to a horn.

Nor could he definitively decide on the font or placement of a serial number. Some were horizontal, some were vertical. Eventually they were all on the left side of the 2nd valve casing, but I have seen one of the first made and the number was on the right side of the 2nd valve.

So my completely unofficial serial number / year of build list is based entirely on the Kanstul horns I've owned (17 to date) up to the year 2005 (the last year I bought a new horn). For Kanstuls I bought after 2005 (all previously owned horns) I relied on Carrie (the brains of the Kanstul office) to look up a serial number for me. And that data was based on a sales receipt, not necessarily the date of build. And sometimes....there was no data available.

And to confuse things even more (why not - we're on such a good roll!)...sometimes the receiver was stamped with which lead pipe was on that horn, such as "25 O," meaning a 25 pipe that'd been opened.

Where it'd been "opened"...your guess is as good as any.

As I said - seldom a dull moment!
