I enjoying reading your posts, Dave. Lots of wisdom there.

DBacon is a real professional, unlike many others here who give very iffy advice. Some seem to know only what they've read.

Usually, but regarding breathing, with inhalation I may "mark" the beginning of inhalation in time but I do not stop the inhalation action as timed event. Inhalation flow naturally tapers down to zero even while continuing the action. I coordinate this to be be just before the note in time enough to end the inhalation action and establish the correct pressure behind the tongue which is already set.
For the beginning of a note or phrase after a sufficient rest, I do not breathe through the mouth corners beginning on the last beat before the note. (A common bad-habit among players.) I inhale using the nose dominantly. Only nose plus mouth inhalation if required. Never mouth-only inhalation.
This allows for a natural breath, (not a "gasp" through the mouth corners) and timing accuracy on note attacks. |
