Interesting that you should view trumpet playing like a battle. To me it’s more like a delicate balancing act. Any entropy introduced into the system makes things that much harder, so I don’t see why someone would purposefully add mental imbalance.

Cichowicz and Arnold Jacobs believed the player is his/her worst enemy. Putting doubts in your mind IS the battle.
This is a very important part of the Chicago teaching methods.
My teacher in music school, Charlie Stine was one of the first pupils of Cichowicz. A friend and mentor John Cvejanovich was also one of Vince's first students. Both stressed the importance of a strong mental attitude towards the instrument.
