I have the opportunity to buy two used trumpets. One is the 6335 Yamaha for € 1200, the other is a B&S Challenger 3137/1 for € 750.
Both trumpets are lacquered and as good as new. Of course I have the chance to try them, but I would like to know who they play them from what they think. I state that I do not like horns that are too dark, but not too bright. I have heard a lot of good about the Yamaha 6335, a little less about the B&S 3137/1. Can anyone who owns these two trumpets give me his impressions? Thank you.

The B&S Challenger 1 isn’t nearly as good as the Challenger II. Stiff, bulky, with ok response.

The Yamaha 6335 is an excellent Trumpet. I thought they were way better than the original Xeno line. Medium weight, great response. Great intonation.

I play a lot on an 8335LAII model. The 6335 feels a lot like a 37 bell version of that.

I've owned both over the years.

I kept Yammy a lot longer than the Challenger I.

a.kemp is correct - Challenger II a different beast, but the 6 series Yamahas still are tremendous trumpets.

If you can test-play both, why are you asking us?
Take the one that sounds and plays the best for you.

Try the two trumpets today. Some reservations on the Yamaha, but all in all a very good trumpet. The B&S looks very good, but the sound is awful. On the forum I read that someone compares it to Bach 37 !! ??? It is not even his shadow. I think about the Yamaha, the price as used seems a bit high.

You said the Yamaha was good as new. Have you seen the prices of used horns on eBay lately? Beat up pro horns are selling for $1200 USD. The Yamaha 6335 is a fine all-around trumpet and still in the Yamaha product line after many years. I can't comment about the B&S because I've never even seen one. Good luck.

Do not know about the B&S, but I use a Yamaha YTR-6335 (silver plated) as my backup horn for outside and other "hazardous" situations. I had to work with the gap and at getting the right mouthpiece for it, but since I have, I really enjoy playing it. It is a good all-round professional horn in my thinking.
