Well...I pulled the trigger again and bought another horn. I really shouldn't have. Anybody else ever do this?

Here is what I bought. I bought the #7 bell in silver plate.

Somehow that happens to me also. Typically I give it to my wife so I can say "No trumpet is too good for MY wife!!"

Looks like it could play really well. Does it?

I’ve done that and I think many others on TH as well. There are just too many interesting horns out there. I was looking at an Adams A6 with a nickel silver bell but then luckily someone else bought it

I really only have the horns in the signature plus my old Blessing plus a few stray horns that come and go. So far successfully kept the number of horns in the house below ten. As long as you can afford the horn there is no need for help, I’d guess. Plus, Thein has a really good reputation (been looking at their C flugelhorn lately, but really can’t justify the expense, whatever it might be).

T.A.S. (trumpet acquisition syndrome) is a variant of G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome). It is incurable. The only way to reach a comfortable state of temporary remission is to purchase or acquire trumpets or other gear. The effects of this therapy are temporary.

The only cure for G.A.S. is an empty bank account.

I've always considered any musical instrument tool for the job at hand not a collectors' item. And yet, I've probably spent the same amount of money as a collector. How does that work?

I have this same issue with mutes. It drives my wife insane.

I don't think you'll get much help with your problem on this forum.

I deal with the very same issue, and have "accumulated" around 6 dozen or so instruments. I feel the difference between a collector and an "accumulator" is that a collector has some form of a plan, or organizing philosophy, whereas an "accumulator" says, "Oooh! A shiny thing!"

Works for me, even when the "shiny thing" is heavily tarnished, or raw brass with heavily accumulated "patina"!

As long as it helps you resist the temptation to put actual triggers on rare vintage horns, I think you should feel free to pull as many metaphorical triggers as you want.

I'm the guy who wants a different thing for each task - kind of a thing where I'm filling in the gaps.

For drums, I have two kits - one full size, one club/bop size - a smattering of cymbals, and several snare drums.

For trumpets, I currently have:

2 Bb - one for legit, one for revving it up
1 C - I started playing in a local orchestra
1 Eb/D - for special church service stuff - Hallelujah Chorus, etc
1 Flugelhorn - ballads, big band etc

I also have several different straight mutes - one for different sounds and ensembles. Some are a bit less cutting, some are softer/louder, etc.

Like my son the guitarist says, "you have to have the gear to cover the bases and that gear should be quality gear."

I agree.

I think I may have found a cure. We are currently packing up our house for a move to be near our grown children.

Packing all the stuff we have collected over the last thirty years living in this I an pretty much cured of consumerism and collecting for the foreseeable future.

I don't see how buying another horn could possibly be considered a problem. Am I missing something?

Do any of you ever get the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer number of awesome trumpets we have today? There are so many cool instruments and so many that would make great main instruments, that at this point I'm actually a little put-off by it all. I find that I'd rather stick to what I have now rather than going out and looking for yet another instrument to buy...and yet, part of me feels compelled to keep looking at the available instruments for yet another cool instrument to play...

One thing I've noticed is, even though we'd probably say it's not the case, that inwardly we think that we need another horn, one that will make us play better, give us the sound we want, sound like our favourite player, etc. Truth is, we may not even deserve the horn we've got.

(Exception being the true collector who has the money.)

That is not a cure, just a temporary restriction on the ability to get therapy.

I solved this problem by buying guitars instead. Voila. No extra cash available for trumpets. YMMV
