These short comparisons were never meant for the public, but since I no longer own the X-13 I’ll have to make use of the only videos I have left.

Let me know which horn you like!

Thanks for sharing these comparison videos. And great playing!

Your videos show the personality of each horn. I could imagine use cases for each horn as it relates to recording and live performance, and expressing different genres of music

Yes. The copper pillar deadened the frequencies quite a bit. The nickel pillar slightly deadened the frequencies.
The horn with no pillar sounded the most resilient and natural in my opinion.

There is a noticeable difference in sound with the pillars that you can't really capture through a microphone. It's not so much the tone, but the frequencies like I mentioned.

I'd describe it at vibrant (no pillar), less vibrant (nickel pillar), and no vibrance (copper pillar).

As for playability, I also felt that the horn maybe slotted a little different with each pillar, but I think it has more to do with your lips wanting to match what your ear is hearing.

I played the worst with the copper pillar. The nickel felt comfortable in any indoor setting. But overall no-pillar worked best for all around use of the horn.

What I noticed is that the Thane allowed you to hit the middle of the note with noticeably less chipping/splitting at the start than on the Edwards. The Thane appeared to be more comfortable for you to attain your intended results. With time (and maybe a different mpc?) you'd probably be able to make the X-13 "behave," but as [cbtj51] writes: Life is Short!

I combined my short comparison clips into one video. (See original post)

I’ve been seeing X-13’s become available on the marketplace, so maybe this video will help you determine if the X-13 could work for you.

I actually like your tone with the X-13 a bit better than the Thane. You sound very clear and crisp with it. However, your precision seems better with the Thane.

I've got an Edwards Gen II at the moment; their largest and heaviest bell. Whie the bell size and weight is not usually my choice, its sound is so excellent I'm keeping it. My range on it is better than most horns as well, it's been a very pleasant surprise. It makes me think that the top Edwards and Getzen horns still fly under the radar for some reason.

And my feeling about the X-13 is that it is a considerable departure from the blow of most horns; so much so that many players don't acclimate well or easily to it. Still, I thought your clear tone on the X-13 was very nice. Great playing overall too; thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment. In these videos my Thane is the large bell version which doesn’t quite speak as clearly as the standard bell model.

I think a closer comparison would’ve been the X-13 vs. Thane standard bell…but I did not own those two horns at the same time.

The X-13 was a fine instrument though. And I do miss how lightweight it was!
