Good on yer for that. How do you like your Kanstul California? The owners club must be quite small!

If you’re in the market for a Bach 72 this is a pretty crazy deal: https://reverb.com/item/62595962-bach-model-lr180s72-stradivarius-professional-bb-trumpet-sn-786107-open-box

Indeed. I love the online estate or auction listings where there's one blurry picture of the trumpet, and three pictures of the case, two of the mute, and one of the lyre.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1948_Benge_Trumpet_bell.jpg

Sometimes a trumpet listed on an Estate Sales ends up being a "Trumpet Vase" But this was one of the photos that was posted on the Estate Sales site when I got my Benge earlier this year. The lady running the Estate Sales said she was constantly getting phone calls about that trumpet and had no idea why. There was only one guy ahead of me in line and he said he was interested in books.

What does open box actually mean? Does it mean that the box was opened, and then shut without opening the case ? Maybe the horn was tried, or bought and then returned? Maybe all of the above apply?

Here is a photo of my 4 vintage trumpets. The Olds, Holton and Conn cost me between $100-$300 each. I paid $1,000 for the Chicago Benge. All were in pretty good shape when I got them. The only thing I did to the Conn was remove the lacquer. It came off using hot water. The Olds Custom Crafted had valve pads that were way too thick that made the valves out of alignment. I had a bell brace resoldered on the Holton and a dent removed from the bell. For some reason the finger buttons shafts were too short for the ports to align when the valves were depressed. Someone must have put the wrong buttons on in the past. Fortunately I just happened to have an extra set of valve buttons that aligned the ports perfectly. I had a tuning slide tube resoldered and a couple of small dents removed on the Benge. All of the horns have exceptionally nice valves and slides, very good compression, and there is not a single dent in the lot. There are deals to be had. Good hunting. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:4_Vintage_Trumpets.jpg

It probably doesn't have any 'legal meaning' - maybe just a term the seller uses to indicate that all the items of a really 'new' instrument are present.

The big question is whether the item is being sold with valid mfg guarantee by an authorized dealer. There might be limitations on the warranty / guarantee regarding appearance and wear issues.

Not a trumpet, but $150 for an Olds Super trombone in Phoenix. Tell a friend:

Off of Facebook Marketplace, picked up an older Getzen 800 cornet for $300. It has some red rot in the leadpipe, plating loss, and resoldered braces, but it plays well. My other recent local finds are a Getzen Elkhorn slide/valve trombone for $100, Getzen Capri trumpet for $50, and a King Silvertone cornet for $80.

On the Phoenix craigslist yesterday there was a Strad 37 in pretty good shape listed for $570, the pictures and serial indicated it was from the 90s.

https://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/msg/d/phoenix-bach-stradivarius-trumpet/7575262482.html

I sent a message asking to come take a look at it, and here's the response I got

yes
I can meet you tomorrow afternoon
XXX XXX St
92101
San Diego

So naturally I replied asking if this person knew they had listed their horn on PHOENIX craigslist.

No reply. The horn no longer appears on Phoenix Craigslist and is not on San Diego Craigslist either.

So there MIGHT be a $570 Strad appearing on San Diego craigslist soon, or this whole thing might be a runaround (my guess). Caveat Emptor of course. But it might be worth checking out over the next couple of days if you're in the San Diego area.

And finally a 2nd reply...

"Oh.. Sorry but I had some work in Phoenix, I just noticed that my location changed when I was traveling. Unless you want me to mail it. I can mail it for $30 if you can pay via pay pal as friends."

Yeah... good luck with that one buddy. Way too many red flags here.

So let this post just be a reminder to all, protect yourself. Lots of scammers out there!

$500 French Besson near Detroit. My fairly uneducated guess would be 50s? SN 0102988.

$550 for a '46 Olds Super in Fresno. Great horn if it's in good condition. Brass tone ring, and last year for the 1st slide ring.
