One of my band mates has an older YAMAHA Flugelhorn, with no model number. All it has is the leadpipe mark (YAMAHA Japan) and a SN (001556)
This one is finished in raw brass, and it plays very well in spite of its age. It has a brighter tone than my flugel (Kanstul 1525 Silver).
What model is this - how would I describe it if I wanted to buy one like it?
I have some photos that I can send - if this would help identify the horn.
regards
John Mitchell

Here's a link to a list of Yamaha flügelhorns and their descriptions:

If the valve slides are vertical and it has a rose brass bell, chances are it is an early 631...

My 731 flugelhorn has 004xxx serial number and I believe that it was made around 1972-73 , is a little different from the modern 731 flugel and it plays much better than any other Yamaha flugel I had try , is very mpc sensitive, with my Reeves 43WF plays bright and muscular, perfect for amplified gigs and big band and with my Reeves 43WHF is like melted butter...dark and smoky.
The Yamaha horns of that period rumors said that it was made under the mr Schilke supervisor.

Regards

After some help - I am pretty sure this horn is a very early model
Yamaha 631. There is no model marking, just the SN on the valve casing
and the YAMAHA logo on the leadpipe. A very nice horn, I think I will be watching for one of these.
