I have a Kanstul made F. Benson Trumpet with 4-digit serial number. I have had this horn since acquiring it used at a yard sale back @1997. I was hoping to get some specs and manufacture date for this horn. I’ve searched online and info is hard to come by (especially with the Kanstul shop closed). The finish is worn, and the valves could use some work, but the horn still sounds great.

I thought Benson & Hedges was a cigarette.

It’s a French Besson MEHA; 4 digit serial number. After reading a bunch of threads about the Kanstul made Besson horns, I gather that it was made in sometime in the early to mid 80s…..

The Kanstul made F. Bessons are very consistent horns, they feel more like Benges, different than the original F. Besson horns.

The Kanstuls are excellent horns, they are pro horns, but are relatively affordable than most.

Should be a .470 bore trumpet - rather nice playing I thought. You are not going to have much luck with serial numbers beyond what you already know. It would require original owners contributing their serial numbers. Kanstul is gone and I can't find an active Besson Loyalist site.

Off topic but related - In the late 60s, I was visiting a H.S. to help out the trumpeters and saw two, unused and ignored trumpets just laying out on a shelf and chair. I asked what was wrong with them and was answered "Oh, they don't have any mouthpieces . I looked a them and they were pre-war French Bessons!

I asked the band teacher if he wanted to trade one since he wasn't using them, for a relatively new Severinsen (mine) and he said "Sure" but he had to check with his supervisor and to come back the next day. Which I did and in true bureaucratic fashion they said "No" because of some paper-work adjustment they'd have to make No to a relatively new Getzen for an "old" horn that they weren't using. Unbelievable.

Yours would be a .464 bore. The bore was indicated by the bell stampings on these: Paris= .470, Paris France= .460, Paris * France= .464"

There's a lot of good info on this thread:
https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1586912#1586912

I would think yours would be about 1985

I boned up on used trumpets when my daughter said out of the blue that she and a couple of friends wanted to play trumpet in the 6th grade band. I researched all of the Loyalist sites so I could ID a good deal. Fortunately, I copied and saved most of the information on the Kanstul French Besson Loyalist site. Turned out my very first ebay bid was for a Kanstul F Besson Classic b-flat. It was posted just as a Besson trumpet with a double horn case for $499. I was the only bidder. A few years later I saw a F Besson Classic C trumpet listed as unused, old stock listed for $750, buy now. I couldn't resist pulling the trigger. A new Kanstul C trumpet at that price? Both posts had photos that positively ID the trumpets as the Kanstul F. Bessons Classics with Najoom pipes. Kanstul F Besson Classics are basically Bach Strad clones (only better). (I was actually on ebay looking for a golf club when I bought the C and typed in F Besson just for fun.) I have heard very good things about the Kanstul Mavin Stamm model. Horn Trader and ACB had videos on utube playing them. I have owned two of the F Besson International models. Didn't like either.
