After many years of doing this it dawned on me that other players might not realize what's literally in front of them while practicing. I generally have the TV on while practicing (unless of course it's serious practice for an upcoming performance) and listening to the theme music with shows like Kojac or Chips has some seriously good trumpet playing. Just picking out the notes blind is a good ear training exercise. I don't have perfect pitch but this helps me develop good relative pitch with the bonus of finding out who some of these wonderful players were. For instance on Chips, I called a good friend in LA who is in the mix of top players there inquiring who did the trumpet playing on that soundtrack. It was him Charley Davis along with Dalton Smith and Warren Luning in the section.
