Hi, I just acquired a Bach 37 at a local music store. The bell is roll stamped, the last word of the stamp is corporation and there is no location below that. The 2nd valve casing is stamped Mt.Vernon, the serial number is 300XX.

From what I can see in the Bach Loyalist site is that’s it’s maybe a 1965 early Elkhart horn with Mt. Vernon parts. Is having no location a rare thing or did it just talk them a while to catch production to only Elkhart parts? I take it the bell is probably Elkhart and not Mt. Vernon? Or is the bell also a Mt. Vernon leftover and they didn’t stamp the location.

I’m cleaning it up and will get the valves cleaned and aligned. The rubber inserts in the valve caps are hard and this thing clanks. It has metal valve guides, and the springs are a little weak, but that may change once the valves are cleaned. I already have another early Elkhart, but I couldn’t let this one get away so one or the other will be for sale soon.

Thanks, Dave

Sounds like you have a transitional model from Mt. Vernon to Elkhart. Uber rare. Please attach pics.

This is how you insert pictures into a post on this forum (read the last two posts in the thread):

Is the third slide stop in the "reverse" direction like the New York Bachs? If so, that is another indicator it is a transition horn. I owned a 37 from this time period in the past and it was a killer horn. Serial was 32XXX if I remember right.

One easy thing to check is the bell rim. When Bach began making bells at Elkhart, there was left-over steel rim wire from Buescher in what had been their plant. If the magnet sticks, it's Elkhart.

Hi, I just finished playing it again after a good cleaning and wow, this horn is what a Bach should be. Ok, the tuning slide stop is reversed and the the bell wire is steel. I looked at trying to get pictures from that website, but something with my iPad isn’t working. I may need to find another way. Also, after a good cleaning, the horn looks excellent and the lacquer is mostly intact and has a nice dark gold color. I found gem.

I’ve contacted Osmun Music and this horn will get blueprinted.

If the trumpet plays the way you like it to now, I wouldn’t fiddle with it except for new felts/rubbers etc.

Every change changes something….

I understand, but there’s one dent needs removing and it needs new valve cap inserts and felts, so PVA may be needed.I can feel the bell bow as slightly out of round (hence blueprinting). Others than that she’s a player.

I have a Committee with an out of round bend that plays better than a Committee with a perfect bend. I just say it gives the horn character!
