I have a question regarding the leadpipe on the Olds Specials that came out of the LA factory in 1947. I just picked up one of these horns.

The leadpipe appears to be conical up until the finger-ring. Was that feature common on all Specials of that era, and what is the conical shapes main function?

Thanks,

Duncan

Hello Duncan,
Late 40's Olds Specials, both cornet and trumpet had receiver-less leadpipes. The mp fits the taper of the shank and then is tapered to the tuning slide. The cool thing is that there is no gap to worry about. But then there is no gap to slot some notes in. I have a 48 Olds Specialk #31xxx. It plays like a dream.

Thanks for the information.

This one is serial #24xxx. Plays real nice although I need to replace the springs as they are noisy.

Duncan,
Are your slide braces like little triangular macaronis? My cornet #25xxx braces are like square/triangular pasta. My trumpets braces, are like BB's soldered to flanges. Both are the tapered leadpipe with no receiver.

I'll post a picture or two later this evening when I get home. Both leadpipe braces are tapered with a oval support on the bell and leadpipe.
