The newest generation has a pinky hook that lifts off of the leadpipe.

I’m pretty sure the Gen 2 has a letter “C” before the serial number, where the Gen 3 has a “D”. I have a Gen 3 with a D before it and I know someone I can ask who has the Gen 2 - I’ll post if it’s otherwise.

No, not on the New York models. On the Chicago models there is a difference in shape between Gen 2 (semi-round) and 3 (square).

I believe the difference can be seen in the mouthpiece receiver with the Gen 3 models having two rings and the earlier versions using the standard Yamaha receiver.

Sadly, this is also not correct. The Gen I had the standard receiver, but both Gen 2 and 3 Chicagos and New Yorks feature the newer receiver design with the 2 rings.

I have the answer for you! I asked Wayne Tanabe at Yamaha today and he said that it's basically impossible to know the difference between Gen 2 and Gen 3 NY C trumpet models just by looking at them. The way you would know is by the serial number.

So when I asked what serial number to look for, here was the answer.
"Gen III NY C trumpets in 2019 started with serial number D48347"

Hope that helps and hope you now have your answer!

My gen 2 NY has a "D"

Looks like chrisf3000 is as close to definitive as we can get

This is actually the best way to discern this. Much more empirical than "well, it looks like this or that."

It is answered in this thread lol, but I see you're looking for Bb in another thread.

It looks like there's no definitive way to answer it unless you ask yamaha themselves. So that's the way to go as it wasn't presented in this thread other than the answer you've already read.

Got reply from Yamaha. This Serial its from 2023, so its a 3rd Model. D79778. I guess i should ask older Serials for find the “start” or they didn’t say from when its 3rd Model.

From Yamaha:
"Gen III YTR-9335NYS started at D48347"

Hope this helps!
