I'm eyeballing the graduate trumpet assistantship for next fall. My worry is that I can't seem to find anybody talking about this school. A handful of GoPro videos on YouTube and a post every couple of years about the same assistantship(none with a reply) are all I can find.

Does anybody know anything about them? Where have their graduates ended up? Did you attend a concert there? Do you know any of the faculty? What is the school's reputation?

I'll be talking to the trumpet professor later this week, but somebody out there MUST know something.

Jazz or Classical?
Do you know Louisianna and, particularly, that part of the state?

Classical mostly.

I don't know the area at all. I'm from Utah.

Why do you want to go there? You.re in for a big culture shock, if you do. I'm not suggesting that's good or bad, just that it ain't Utah, Dorothy.

What does your current professor know about the place or the teacher?

Look them up on Facebook, see if you can find anything about them.

The current teacher is Dr. Logan Place, look him up online and on this forum as well and see if you can find any more information. It's not a well-known program--this is the first time that I've heard of it. Doesn't mean anything, of course, but that would explain why there isn't much info out there.

If I were in the market for another degree and got the assistantship, I would go. You'll have different weather and food for sure.

That stipend isn't much. My ex-wife got 14K a year when she was in grad school 30 years ago. They don't mention opportunities for side hustles, but you'll undoubtedly need to find some.

Mine was longer ago than that, but I got a good, monthly, stipend plus my tuition cost waived, which was a pretty good deal. Best to see what other schools are offering in order to put this stipend in its proper perspective.

My undergrad professor doesn't know any more than I do. I am auditioning at other places.

This one just popped onto my radar really late and I wanted to find out more before making a decision.

You should go there and visit, since you can only imagine what it will be like. You don't want to go there to study and find out that you don't want to be there. Better to visit, get a feeling for the place and the people and talk with your prospective teacher. Plus it will be like going to another country. Get ready for culture shock. Get ready to address people as Ma'am and Sir.

It is in Hammond (been through there a bunch), not a bad location being less than an hour from Baton Rouge and an hour from New Orleans where there should be opportunities (the trumpet teacher plays in a Baton Rouge orchestra). Worth taking a look at IMO unless you are a top guy.

Don't let these statements scare you away. I grew up in the deep south, and I like it just fine. And there's nothing wrong with respect.
When I go to a big sophisticated city, or to Utah, or Greece, or Honduras, or wherever, I am open-minded and nice to everyone. I learn a lot, and I get along fine.

Just to be clear, I am not dissing the deep South - I used to live in Biloxi, Miss. and went in and out of the region in question with regularity. I am just pointing out that things are different from Idaho, so be prepared. . . or forewarned, as the case may be, LOL.

I have lived within a couple of hours of Hammond all my life. It is very country living but with a cajun flair.

Folks are friendly, and the atmosphere is similar to most state universities. The premier music schools in Louisiana are Loyola University, LSU, USL, & SLU.

I agree that a recon visit is mandatory, with interrogation as proves possible.

SEEK AND THE SHALL FIND!

I know this is a few months late and the OP likely already made his/her decision, but I just wanted to add one more thing.

Never underestimate the cost of living. Southeastern Louisiana is going to be significantly lower cost of living than any of the major cities in the North or the West of the USA. You would likely save $1000s every year by that alone.

Additionally, I've lived a large portion of my life in Utah, so I can tell you that it's culturally different, but you might like the change of pace. People in both places are quite religious, they just practice different religions. Life is a little less hectic in the South.

Also, no snow and no inversions. If you know, you know.

I did decide. I had a video call with the professor, who was great to talk to and seems to love the area and school. He sent me a couple videos of performances and offered a remote audition option. Ultimately I felt like I had a good list of schools I was more interested in and didn't apply.

I auditioned at three schools, got two good offers and accepted the quintet assistantship at the University of New Mexico.
