Greetings,

My name is Sebastian Bell and I am a trombonist in the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band and currently also part of our band's auditions team. The Heritage of America Band, located in Hampton, Virginia, is one of four Air Force regional bands that handle auditions for the entire regional band career field.

I am glad to be part of this community and would like to use this forum to provide some basic information about the Air Force bands, our vacancies, auditions and answer any questions students and professional players interested in joining the Air Force bands may have.

I am doing this in part as my unit is holding an audition for CLASSICAL TRUMPET ON APRIL 23RD 2025 that I would like as many potential applicants to know about as possible. I also hope to give members of this community a chance to ask for and receive information about a career in the U.S. Air Force as a musician for potential future audition opportunities.

As a start, please see the below links for general information about our upcoming audition on:

https://www.music.af.mil/Auditions/

I am looking forward to any questions asked either in response to this post or via private message. I am also reachable via hoabauditions@gmail.com

Very respectfully,

Sebastian Bell, SrA, USAF

Sebastion, have any openings for old, broken down band officers? I'm getting bored.

You say this audition is for classical trumpet. But let's be honest - whoever gets that slot is also going to have to do other band duties as required and as needed, correct? That would include marching band and other ensembles that might need someone to fill in.

That's the way it was when I was in (a tad over 7 years total), and I had a couple of years with Captain Gary Sapp (kehaulani) as my commander.

So unless things have drastically changed in the USAF field bands, don't you think that full and honest disclosure is a much better way of informing people about this opening?

Riffing off of that, I was very surprised to see a job ad for a style-specific position for a field band. I will admit that some of that has always gone on under the table based on any particular bands' needs, but not universally. But times change. Just caught me by surprise, too.

Matter of fact, though, the versatility of Air Force bands was always one of the things that attracted me to them, in the first place.

Good morning and thank you both for your service as well as for your great questions. I am glad to provide some answers to that.

Things have indeed changed quite a bit. In the past, openings used to be advertised simply as "trumpet" vacanies. Currently, we are instead holding very specific auditions for two different positions. Auditions are being held for either Classical Trumpet OR Jazz Trumpet. This is to find highly qualified personnel for the different obligations trumpet players in the United States Air Force regional bands have to be able to fulfill.

For our upcoming classical trumpet audition, we are looking for musicians with a strong background and skillset in orchestral and chamber music playing. Such a player would primiarily be playing in our concert band as well as in the group's brass chamber music ensembles. This is usually a brass quintet and occasionally a larger brass ensemble. The audition requirements reflect that as well.

On occasion, someone who joined as a classical trumpet player will still be required to "help out" in a different music ensemble within the unit, like the jazz ensemble, based on the manning situation. We do however audition for jazz trumpet players seperately. When jazz trumpet auditions are being held, interested applicants have the chance to specify whether they would like to audition with a focus on soloing or with a focus on lead playing.

When needed, being part of the band's ceremonial formation is a requirement for all band members and this can occasionally involve marching.

Thank you again for the great questions !

And Sebastian is giving good information
As a former member (but more recently) happy to answer any questions.

Long story but, regrettably, no. Actually, conducting that band was in my master plan but things just didn't work out in life like I expected.
