O.K. my first post here, got to get out of the horns forum and concentrate on playing and maybe save some money too:) I'm about 3 months into my comeback after 22 years, I started on a Conn #5 because it was the most comfortable one I had. I've been told I should try to transition to a bigger mpc like a Bach 3C, is this a good idea or not? Also, I've noticed that when I practice for a while an a Bach 5C which is bigger than the Conn 5, and then switch back to the Conn, my range and ease of playing on the smaller mpc is significantly improved, at least for awhile. Why is this? And is it a good thing or am I taking chances on screwing up my embouchure? One more, is it better to get used to playing on a range of sizes or just stick with one? I know that's probably a loaded question. And if these questions have been addressed elsewhere, forgive me. I'm posting this in the mpc forum too. Thanks.

Bob

At three months in, I'm not sure I'd be doing a lot of mouthpiece switching unless you've been advised to do so by someone from whom you're taking lessons. You're really still getting your fundamentals back! I don't know the size of the Conn 5, but a Bach 5C seems plenty large, especially given that a Bach 7C is a typical beginner's mouthpiece.

My advice: Spend the time you'd spend on mouthpiece hunting on practicing, spend the new mouthpiece $$ on a lesson (or two).

$0.02 from a fellow comebacker (i.e., FWIW),

Steve

Radiobob,
I agree with Steve. Get yourself back into playing shape by sticking with what works. When I started my comeback a yaer or so ago, I spent way too much time looking for this and that, rather than focusing on the goal. I finally settled into a mouthpiece that works (Bach 1 1/2C for me), and I started making progress once I focused my energy.

Another $.02 worth

Play the Conn for now. Down the road you can pick out a nice GR, but only have you've taken your redevelopment further down the road.
