Peter,

Thanks for looking into the dates for these players at work. It's nice to go to the source for this kind of information. Looking forward to learning what you find out.

I have found some references for The Halle Orchestra and included them here. Gareth Small has been removed from the Principal Trumpet list based on the information on his bio at Chetham's School of Music. Also how do you include the symbol for an "e" with the accent mark over the top? I need this for Hall"e"!

New information from the October 1978 ITG Journal from the article by Michael Laplace entitled, “A Tribute to the British Trumpet Tradition”. Modified the end date for Ernest Hall from 1930 to 1929. Modified the dates for George Eskdale from 1932-1960 to 1934-1956. Added Dennis Clift from 1956-1960.

Founded in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra was England’s first independent, self-governing orchestra. It soon became a limited company, owned and managed by the players.

London Symphony Orchestra
Principal Trumpet Players

Start-End______Name

1990-Current_______Rod Franks (Principal)
1977-2000_________Maurice Murphy (Principal) (Semi-retired, Still Playing as of 2003-2004)
1983-1990_________Malcolm Smith (Principal) (Is 1990 correct?)
1975-1977_________John Wallace (Principal) (The dates are approximate, help needed)
1967-1976_________Howard Snell (Principal)
1961-196?_________William Lang (Principal)
1960-1961_________Alan Stringe
1956-1960_________Dennis Clift
1934-1956_________George Eskdale
1929-1934_________????
1924-1929_________Ernest Hall
1904-1924_________John Solomon (Is 1924 correct?)

Web site: London Symphony Orchestra Trumpet Players

Current roster for the 2003-2004 Season:
Maurice Murphy – Principal Trumpet*
Rod Franks – Principal Trumpet*
Gerald Ruddock
Nigel Gomm

*NOTE: From the LSO web site: The LSO has always attracted players of top quality. In recent years the introduction of the 'joint Principal' scheme has encouraged musicians of the highest calibre to bring their skills to the Orchestra whilst giving them the flexibility to maintain their own solo and chamber careers.

EDIT: Andrew also sent me this information that I forgot to include the for the initial post:

George Reynolds Co-Princ (1950's-1960's?)

I received some input from Andrew Tomlinson today about the Halle Orchestra that fills in some blanks on our list and gives a good approximation for some dates of tenure. We’re making great progress on this ensemble!

Hi Derek

I've been looking at the book by Bram Gay "Trumpet Involuntary" and "Orchestra" edited by Andre Previn trying to sort out the dates of Willie Lang and Bram Gay. We seem fairly close.

In "Orchestra" page 56, Willie Lang says "Then in 1961 I came down to London to join the LSO as principal Trumpet. I've been with them ever since." (This might affect the LSO list).

So I think that might make Bram Gay 1961-1969.

I’ve also discovered two more principal trumpets:

Bram Gay says on page 180 "Sid (King) joined as second trumpet and rose to principal, a job for which he had more than adequate talent but perhaps not quite the temperament. By the time of my arrival he had become third player and an admirable back-up; a superb practical orchestral musician, his talent and taste extending to all sorts of music."

Page 68 "The old Halle [pre-war], with a handful of exceptions, had unexpectedly chosen to join the new BBC Orchestra." [Regional Orchestra]

And on page 69 "Among the loyal remnants of the old orchestra were remarkable talents. Arthur Lockwood, the aging first trumpet, was still among Britain's finest;"

Unfortunately, no dates, though we can probably make some rough guesses.

Hi again Derek

It occurs to me that if John Dickinson (17 years) followed Bram Gay in 1969 this would take us to circa 1986. Which could the right time period.

Gareth Small appears now to be only Assistant Principal, when I did a google search "Gareth Small +trumpet". (Chetham's School).

I can't seem to find any dates for John MacMurray at present.

Andrew

More input from Andrew Tomlinson! New names, dates, and a story about Harry Dilley.

Quote:

Here is what Bram Gay said about Harry Dilley in his autobiography:

"It helped that our principal trumpet was a fine artist and a wonderful colleague. Harry Dilley had been at Covent Garden since the late "forties". The most remarkable trumpeter with whom I've been privileged to work, he was kindness itself. We had a lot of background in common, from the Salvation Army up through the Guards. He seemed glad to have me, probably because his other trumpets were so much younger. In his sixties, Harry played like a man of twenty-five, a trumpeter's trumpeter with a unique place in the London profession. A modest retiring man, he could have been famous, but the comparative anonymity of the opera pit suited him. Even the admiration of his colleagues embarrassed Harry a little. We played wonderful repertoire together, his astonishing performance a compensation for the fun I was missing."

More input from Andrew Tomlinson. It interesting to see Longinotti on this list. I remember working out of his etude book in college, but I had no idea about his background. Interesting what I'm learning as we're putting these lists together!

Here is the best list that I can put together for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra so far (based on input from Tal Katz, brass2002, PC (Pierre), and what I was able to find on the Internet). Please help if you have dates or details of other Principal Trumpet players in the IPO, and references if possible. There is an overlap in dates between Glenn Fischthal and Charles R. Butler. If anyone can sort that out, please let me know.

Hi Derek,

Regarding the IPO, Ken Cox came before Robert Frear, so their names should be inverted. I think Robert Frear left in 1990.

Sorry I am not more helpful, but perhaps Tal can help us if he has a lesson with Yigal, as I think he also studied with Ken and definitely Rob.

Derek,

Regarding the Suisse Romande Orchestra, my first year on trumpet was when we lived (very shortly, only 2 years) in Geneva in the 70's. I remember that my teacher was a student of Michel Cuvit, who got to see me in one of my very first lessons and suggested that I take a trip to the dentist to correct teeth alignment for easier playing!

I had an old LP with Haydn and Hummel, played by Longinotti and Cuvit, respectively. They had completely opposite musical approach to the instrument, Longinotti playing very brashly in a positive sense, with a brightish sound and with bravoure, while Cuvit had a very sweet, soft sound. Cuvit took the 3rd movement very slowly, single tongued. Quite different approaches than the standard Haydn/Hummel output!

Regards,
Pierre.

Here is the information that I currently have for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I need help with some of the dates (it appears Chris Martin began as Principal Trumpet in 1999 based on the attached reference but it may be 2000 instead). There is an overlap between the dates for John Head and James Thompson based on the attached references. Is it that John Head was Principal through the 1989-1990 season and then became a Co-Principal when James Thompson joined the group? Any information on players before John Head would be appreciated too!

Andrew Tomlinson reminded me of the February 1998 ITG Journal reference with years of tenure for Principal Trumpet players with many different US orchestras. This modifies the end date for John Head and puts a one-year gap in our list between John Head and James Thompson.

MrClean,

Thanks for the input on Eugene Blee. I found a reference for him in the article about Marie Speziale in the June 2002 ITG Journal, but there were no dates of tenure for him. I’m assuming that someone came between Eugene Blee and Heinrich Wohlgemuth. Hopefully someone else can fill in that blank. Also, there is a quote in the Marie Speziale article that she played Principal in Cincinnati for the 1974-1975 season.
